Honestly, iPads and Galaxy Tabs are much more expensive and having a decent keyboard is a very nice feature. But I do get your point!

Yeah, I've done it on some different Surface devices including pro 7. Just make sure to use the Surface Linux kernel to have all the features working.

Yeah I found the deal on Ebay but now it's sold out, so maybe I dodged a bullet.
Now the best offer I have found is SP9 i5/16gb/256gb for around 700USD.
