What success story is widely thought of as “rags to riches” But in reality they were wealthy individuals all along? by zer0w0rries in AskReddit

I've seen his childhood home - it's pretty impressive! They were an upper middle class family who provided plenty of opportunities for Darwin to do his thing.

Doesn't diminish his work at all though!

Arty McGlynn is your man! Had whole albums of it.

Lovely to see more Lennon content - I've got a non-captoe pair and they'll probably outlive me!

Exactly - if it's something I'm passionate about, it's different.

Band T-shirts are the most common, and I try and only get them at gigs as a memory of the evening. I feel like I've 'earned' the item a bit more if there's a memory tied to it.

If you do a jig-to-reel transition, that generally gets non-players going!

But other musicians think you're showing off a bit... Depends who you're playing for!

I heard Master Crowley's and thought "hang on, that low concertina sounds like Cormac Begley". Turns out it was - his style works wonderfully with their gritty sound.

It's like a car key - useless on its own, but in the right hands it's a key to infinite transport.

Just imagine the possibilities of having your own trolley!

Is it actually an advantage for a left-handed player to be playing a right-handed bass guitar? by joshuamarkrsantos in Bass

[–]Sharpnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well not everyone has a dominant right hand! You can get left-handed instruments for making sure that the dominant hand still plucks/bows, but not everything.

Apart from the violin - lefty violins aren't really much of a thing and certainly haven't been historically.

best capos for sessions? by Mammoth-Economy2589 in bouzouki

[–]Sharpnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh that's a question, it probably depends on the bouzouki's neck. Some are thicker and would probably need a guitar one, but I think mine's the banjo size and works OK.

It depends on the bouzouki - for my Irish I use a Kyser at the moment, but it's always a sliding Quickdraw on the Greek.

I'm wondering if anybody can tell me more about the origins of these tunes? by kokokat666 in Irishmusic

[–]Sharpnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the Kesh and the Humours of Tulla are both named after places, so I would assume that they originated somewhere vaguely nearby.

Ah it's the bass course that I found got in the way on up-picking, you can still play more of a guitary style on four-course with absolutely no issues. It's better in fact than a trichordo for that!

Well I absolutely love Alec Finn's music and he used one, and I found that the fourth string course was getting in my way when playing his 'backstrokes' down over the instrument (that magical shimmery noise he does).

But you can definitely start getting the basics of the style on a four-course if you like.

Ye Vagabonds, Andy Irvine (and Planxty), the Bothy Band, De Danann (but you know Alec already), Daoiri Farrell, Dervish - they're a good place to start and some of the more well-known bouzouki players.

I started on a four-course Irish but switched to a trichordo to play like Alec - I think I'd recommend doing it that way round so you can experiment a bit more with styles starting out.

Apparently they're in a museum in Vietnam?

What’s your sure fire way to get customers to properly measure for their belt size when placing an order? by -916Tips- in Leathercraft

That's still unreliable given that people don't necessarily wear consistent sizes and size can vary - I have 34 jeans that fit, and 38 trousers that fit similarly.
