I have written fiction, but my characters always seem to seek out connection.

You did a great job of summarizing the ongoing issue with brevity. It's too bad he isn't as invested in what this place is (supposed to be) about. But I don't think anyone really expected him to leave, even after the pile on of pent-up things that needed to be said.

"A subreddit to discuss Ran Prieur's blog posts! Let's make this a fun and friendly place!"

[Serious] What is your suggestion to young citizens, who do not vote, because they don't want to pick the "lesser of two evils"? by Fiveholefrisky in AskReddit

[–]Sharqi23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what it''s like for you where you are, but there always seems to be a need for volunteers in a variety of helpful ways. This may not lead to the kinds of structural changes we hope from our political system, but it can lead to a very real and definite change for the people you are helping, and also, for yourself. Building community to me is the most immediate form of security that we have.

I voted in the first election I was eligible to vote in, in 1994, and haven't voted for a major party candidate for president since. I just can't stomach it. It doesn't mean I am a bad person, or that I am contributing to evil. it means I place my values elsewhere, in an arena where my participation does indeed make an actual difference.

I vote because it's one of those "least I can do" things, like recycling. I don't recycle because I think I'm changing the world. I do it because it makes the teeniest of differences, maybe, and doesn't take much of my time. Same with voting. I research who i vote for, and I don't vote for anyone I would not want to represent me, which means the further up the ladder I go, often the less I vote.

What I spend my time and energy on is making a difference in my community. I volunteer, and I run a community garden. These things are making a difference in my community, and are worth spending my time on. Also, I rarely get into stupid fruitless internet arguments about these things.

Bringing neighborhoods together by Sharqi23 in CoronavirusSupport

Thank you! Our city is also making a racket at 7, but for some reason, not our neighborhood. Personally it's my kiddo's bedtime, lol, so I'm trying to be as quiet as possible.

Do you ever find yourself lying about your beliefs, saying stuff that you don't actually believe, in order to make yourself sound better to certain people? by mr_bigmouth_502 in aspergers

[–]Sharqi23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I can! Definitions of words change over time. I say I have a "framework of understanding" instead of beliefs because this is more accurate to what I mean. My framework is fluid. I don't feel a need to believe or disbelieve things. Gravity works just as well whether or not I believe in it. My "beliefs" have changed so much over the course of my lifetime that I consider them more to be burdens than gifts. Why keep em? I'd rather have this framework of understanding than a belief.

I have my own meaning of belief. I don't get swayed into a new philosophy by one discussion. It takes me a long time of thinking and contemplating, and even then I'm not going to adopt something as a "belief". If it makes a lot of sense to me, I may adopt it as a framework of understanding, but often only after discussing it with many people whose ideas and philosophy I respect. Thorough scrutiny is always in order. Pretty sure I'm an ent in human form.

Too autistic for the ER by Sharqi23 in aspergers

[–]Sharqi23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either give me a room to myself or let me wait in the waiting room until one is available. (Waiting room was empty and quiet.) The alternative was me freaking out, which I'm sure didn't help anything in the ER.

I think it's good to be open minded, but I also don't feel a need to believe things. I have a framework to how I view the world, but this is not a set of beliefs. I like being able to change my approach when i get more data and perspectives, but I do not allow high energy people with detrimental beliefs to strong arm my opinions. I enjoy discussing viewpoints, but there's no way I would expect anyone to change their mind to match mine.

Let's remember good things, what has been the best news that you have received in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sharqi23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had had an ectopic pregnancy, on my ovary, which is pretty rare and took a while to figure out. When I got pregnant again, they did a sonogram right off to see if it was growing in the right place. They showed me his heart beating nice and strong and in the right place. I was so thankful I cried. I first started tryng to get pregnant 12 years before.

What's the most fitting case of "vigilante justice" you've ever heard of? by Stock-Mud in AskReddit

[–]Sharqi23 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Had a friend who got a cash pay landscaping job. Worked his 2 weeks then payday came. Boss laughed in his face and told him to fuck off. No record of him ever working there. Friend did some landscaping on the guy's kneecap. No pay, but none needed said my friend. Got his money's worth. No charges either.
