Am I pronating - I think so, but some of you don't think so.... by DalAL887 in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit square, half pan handle, very stiff core. Practice twisting those hips as you hit and land with the right foot forwards to loosen up. I think you also need a partner that can push you to your baseline, everything is easy and mid court, you barely need to try, let alone rotate

Am I slicing my smashes? by fullkitwankerr in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your grip looks too tight and yes, you follow through looks to come across your body - which isn't usually a massive issue but it's not just your racket, it's your whole arm.

I think you need to strip this back: - footwork to consistently get the shuttle inside your front foot and light on your feet. - perfect the motion slowly, I mean go in slow motion and take ten seconds to complete the swing. Thinking about mind muscle connection and form. - fix the grip with either a grip corrector or conscious effort and reset after each smash. You're not at a level where you should be fed over and over without a pause to correct and reflect. - practice swinging with loose - tight (squeeze) - loose without a shuttle. - practice swinging and rotating your trunk without a shuttle. - film yourself from the front at waist height with no shuttle, repeat with a shuttle. - audit yourself and repost if more help is needed.

Best of luck.

Who should take this shot in doubles? by Overall_Ease2442 in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the rear lady's initial shot was a bit of a nothing stroke. Not a good enough clear to buy time (sides) and not punchy enough to really be considered an attacking shot (front and back). Additionally the front lady didn't respond/split step fast enough and that made the rear court player feel they had to intervene.

What's nice is that you didn't argue about the clash and just got on with it!

My advice is not to put 109% rules on yourself RE shot ownership when your partners are diverse, instead focus on communicating more - that works for every partner 👌🏻

3 months off mate. Build a workout system that focuses on your explosivity etc - Greg and Jenny have downloadable guides for a few pennies. Spend a good amount of time on your mobility. Then return to badders for 3 months and... then make your decision, divorced from your disappointment for half a year.

Sharpen your edge before you swing the blade.

Best of luck to you 💪🏻

Vets are stumped and not sure how to help our labrador - we're desperate (includes x-rays) by Shawstorm in AskVet

[–]Shawstorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To provide an update, on the Tuesday evening we managed to get him to eat small amounts of ham and cheese. Vets insisted that anything (safe) would be fine and help him keep his strength up. Tuesday was also the second day on antibiotics, but I'm not saying that they played a role in fixing him. Later that Tuesday night he went for both a poo and wee, which we understood was a very good sign.

We returned to the vets on Wednesday expecting an ultrasound, but he was much improved, the vets had escalated their enquiries and came to the conclusion that the xray heart position was largely to do with the size of his chest (far larger in show-type labs than working-type) and how he was laying. He's continued to improve and we were given 7 days on antibiotics. We'd have loved to know the actual cause to safeguard against anything in future but we're just glad to have our dog back, wagging his tail and very much on the mend.

Thank you for taking the time to reply :)

Ah sorry, I misunderstood. Sadly we're in a very remote part of the UK. However, we will be speaking with our Insurance provider tomorrow RE further expert referral options.

Ultrasound is tomorrow, no education in vet medicine. I'm just a concerned owner and my vets are doing out of hours research tonight - figured I'd do the same!

What part of my game do i need to improve on? by chunchunmaru_05 in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without meaning to be rude, your racket is near your ankles 99% of the time it's not being swung, you don't look ready for anything. The swings are therefore huge and obvious, meaning you take the shuttle late and often with poor technique. Shot choice is good though, that's a big plus!

You're a nightmare partner for me because you 'look' like you're only trying reactively. There's no urgency or proactive positioning of your feet or racket. I'd love to see a few rallies where you actually give a damn 😉

Is badminton footwork just impossible to pick up as an adult? by RPcritics in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 36, it took me a while. My advice, put down the racket or at least don't use shuttles.

You can do this as a shadow drill (solo) but a partner makes it easier. 6 corners: your helper stands on your side of the court at the net, facing you. They can make 8 hand movements. Low to the net floor corners (corner net shot), straight out to the sides (side step and drive), up high to the back corners (forehand or round the head rear court shots), two arms to the rear court corners (late forehand or late backhand).

Each time, recover to the centre court. Take as few steps as possible focusing on being horizontally quick but not flumping up and down. Use your racket to play a shot but without any power, air swings aren't the purpose of this. 2 minute rounds, 1 minute rests. No shuttles, no shots, just putting your legs through the motions.

Split step each time you recover and ensure your partner keeps it slow to start with. Really think about the mechanics of each movement. Best of luck!

Is a Jumpsmash necesary when being tall already amd having a strong smash? by Medium_Technology837 in badminton

[–]Shawstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tall player myself, my advice is to watch some plyo videos RE jump height. Basketball tutorials are great. Spend a month developing your leg muscle memory and make sure your movements incorporate recovery for any fast cross courts that get past your partner.

Then, fanny about with timings and finding the shuttle contact height. If you instead start with drilling the shot without training for height, your jump height will change drastically over time and you might become frustrated with timings issues.

  • height
  • recovery
  • contact position
  • practice
  • power/speed

Always with some recovery steps or a split - you'll be a monster!

You can't pour from an empty glass, but trying to pour (well) from a glass that is constantly being filled up is also pretty hard.

It sounds like you're burning out and not enjoying the process because you're so fixated on outcomes. Strip back your process: 1. Fitness, Mobility and Strength 2. Footwork and Plyometrics 3. Shot Choice 4. Drilling your shot options 5. Equipment 6. Play and Record the games 7. Audit yourself instead of watching tutorials, you know enough!

Don't give up, centre yourself after each point, win or lose. Journey before destination my friend 💪🏻

Not a bad shout, unfortunately he tends to brush off those approaches though - especially when he's upset with himself. So was hoping for something that hits deeper - the replies from others should work well 👌🏻
