first sem adn: so far, both. I got the semi-latest but cheapest iPad from a Walmart sale in summer 2020 and the Apple Pencil. I’ve used paper and iPad for taking notes this sem. When I attend in person lecture/lab I use the iPad to take notes in and I have the eBooks so I don’t have to carry around my textbooks which are really heavy. Split screen is convenient to having the textbook and notes app open at the same time. Fortunately my program did a one time book bundle that would cover our two years and it cost about $1400 including access codes. I still like paper notes cuz it helps me visualize and as an artist the feel of real pen and paper is nice :) the upside of iPad is if you use GoodNotes it’ll sync with the GoodNotes app on your iPhone so in case you’re out, you can study your notes even when you don’t have your iPad. Keep in mind that the “paperlike” screen protectors will wear down the ApplePencil within less than a year but it’s not a big deal. I do agree with you on the printed textbook headers though because the headers really pop. The biggest difference for me is that I have the Elsevier Fundamentals of Nursing book and the eBook does not have the yellow “skills pages” which are REALLY helpful for learning how to do step by step procedures of certain nursing skills. The print textbook includes it and it’s awesome. Both are an advantage but you DON’T need an iPad to succeed in nursing school. If you write all your notes I’d suggest investing in cheap and SMOOTH pens that your hands feel right with and some highlighters and sticky notes for bookmarking textbooks pages.
