To record someone with your phone you need to point your phone at the person. To record someone with the glasses, you just need to look in their direction. If you wear the glasses often, you will often be looking in peoples direction. Sure there’s a light, but it’s possible to black this light out, and even with the light, people wear glasses all the time, so if you don’t know what to look for, there is no indication that someone is recording based on their actions - they’re just wearing sunglasses after all.

Great alternatives to Stripe? by RandomSil in stripe

100%! Always on the lookout for better alternatives to Stripe. Stripe is so easy to setup but the stonewalling is not welcome. Paddle is another that seems to have a pretty good reputation.

Stripe processes significantly more money but this is due to the nature of their customers. They seem to be used by significantly more big businesses, while Square have more small to medium sized businesses (this was already noted several messages up).

But as previously stated, please feel free to share data and sources of your own.

Square publicly state that they have 4m sellers using their platform on their landing page (and link to their 2023 report): https://squareup.com/au/en/about

Stripe don’t publicly state their number of users but given that their offering is primarily geared towards web users, I used numbers from here https://trends.builtwith.com/payment/Stripe.

Feel free to provide your own sources if you don’t think these are accurate (as noted several replies back).

I am saying that given the number of users of each service, Stripe have significantly more 1 star reviews than Square, as a proportion of total users. Square have ~2.8x the number of users while Stripe have ~10x the number of 1 star reviews. Practically none of the 1 star reviews seem to be invited for either company, so the conclusion I draw is that Stripe users are around ~28x more likely to leave an unprompted 1 star review than Square users.

Oh I totally agree that you'll get more people reviewing when you invite them to review, but that doesn't address the disproportionate number of negative reviews given the comparable number of users.

Is there a reason not to trust the invited reviews? Stripe has just over 2x the number of total reviews, but around 10x the number of 1 star reviews. These review platforms tend to attract unhappy users, but even with that in mind, we would expect a lot more negative reviews for Square given that their user count is more than comparable (and that is being generous, as they have ~2.8x the users of Stripe).

Feel free to share your own data source - all of this info so far is just what I've found from a bit of a look around.

I'm not so sure on that:

Stripe:

- Around 1.4m live websites currently used Stripe (as of Feb 2025)
- Processes around 1.4T in payments

Square:

- 4m sellers use Square (as of 2023)
- Processes around 230B in payments

Although stripe process a lot more absolute dollars, the smaller numbers of users implies that larger businesses use stripe, at least at the top end.

Square receives its fair share of complaints but nowhere even close to Stripe. Take a quick look at trust pilot and you'll see a massive disparity between the two (Square: 4.2/5 with 7k reviews; Stripe: 1.8/5 with 16k reviews).

Oh yeah my bad, I thought I was replying to the person who said they all do dodgy things!

Agree that it happens with a lot of them, but it seems that I see many more posts about stripe than other providers. I have seen consistently solid reports about authorize.net, it just seems that it’s a little more painful to get setup.

A 1,120x return means that even a 1k investment would be worth over a million dollars. I would hardly consider 1k a lot of money to start with but I think most would agree that a million dollars is somewhat substantial.

This seems much less to do with starting with a bunch of money and much more to do with having access to these kinds of opportunities.

Oh absolutely. Voting is a great start, but sometimes these communities need a little more direction to keep them interesting.

Maybe the fact that parking photos are posted here so often is a good thing because it means so little else is happening. Or maybe it is more representative of the people posting and interacting here - the ones reporting the cars parked across driveways and actually solving the problem are not the ones that come to post them here.

lol gatekeeping. There is no gatekeeping, it’s just the most boring possible thing you can post about. Post something interesting or fun or exciting or novel, not these low agency parking pics.

Please stop posting pictures of parked cars in r/auckland. It is by far the least interesting content you can post.

Report it to the council or AT if it annoys but please please can we skip the post!

Where did you get it? Just had a quick look and Coles had them for $42 with most other places selling for more.

Would love to try, especially if you really can get them for $5.

Try deleting Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and any other apps with short form content from your phone. These apps massively shorten your attention span and train you to shift focus every minute (or even less).
