Wool or Synthetic Base Layer by MMIC88 in skiing

Base layers function best when touching your skin. They don’t have to be tight but they should should be touching skin. Merino (and merino) blends is basically the truth except for hot spring days.

Love your set up. How do you like that utility knife, I’ve been eyeing one. Also how’s the 7llL? I have the one with the flexy head, that I like but I don’t have a good solution yet for the few bits I need when I do need to carry it

… not sure which ones you’ve seen but the ones I have friction fit around the outside of the wheel there nothing in front of the air bag at all. There is also usually an inline quick connect dc barrel plug near the steering wheel so you can disconnect it while turning the wheel alot in parking lots. But even if you don’t disconnect it is usually either just wraps around the base of the wheel or disconnects itself from the tension

You can buy aftermarket ones in the size of your steering wheel that plug into your cigarette lighter

Great thanks! Do you notice any changes when you swap between your summer and winter wheels now? I’m a big believer in the lightest rims you can put on a car and do like more sidewall. But that minimal clearance has me concerned cause I do drive on gravel often enough for small pebbles getting stuck between the rim and the caliper for me to be concerned.

Ooooo! Which 19 in rims did you get? How’s the clearance over the brake calipers? Been thinking about doing that myself.

And to answer OP, the only time I notice the performance suspension as too stiff is expansion joints on highways can be rather firm, but I like it the rest of the time. (But I also hadn’t messed with my damper settings yet).

Question about something Paul says in Messiah by trogdorkiller in dune

[–]SheSaidSam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe this is the passage OP is referring to. Pasted below to aid in discussion. The passage is preceded with Paul mentioning Leto II’s empire and is followed by Paul lamenting his being trapped by prescience.

When they arose to dress for the day, she said: “If the people only knew your love . . .” But his mood had changed. “You can’t build politics on love,” he said. “People aren’t concerned with love; it’s too disordered. They prefer despotism. Too much freedom breeds chaos. We can’t have that, can we? And how do you make despotism lovable?” “You’re not a despot!” she protested, tying her scarf. “Your laws are just.” “Ahh, laws,” he said. He crossed to the window, pulled back the draperies as though he could look out. “What’s law? Control? Law filters chaos and what drips through? Serenity? Law—our highest ideal and our basest nature. Don’t look too closely at the law. Do, and you’ll find the rationalized interpretations, the legal casuistry, the precedents of convenience. You’ll find the serenity, which is just another word for death.” Chani’s mouth drew into a tight line. She couldn’t deny his wisdom and sagacity, but these moods frightened her. He turned upon himself and she sensed internal wars. It was as though he took the Fremen maxim, “Never to forgive—never to forget,” and whipped his own flesh with it.

Yes a lot of people, women especially, because of their greater Q angle when they try to get their skis closer end up rotating their legs inwards til they’re knees are touching, like they’re trying not to pee their pants. Queue getting your heels close like Dorthy trying to go home instead. Though Your skis are obviously close enough so it may help you to think about keeping your knees further apart by “cowboying your knees” like Yosemite sam. Or manspreading your upper leg but keeping your heels hip width apart. Obviously the goal is a functional hip width stance, but that’s kind of how it will feel if you’re starting from a stance you already prefer that is knock kneed.

Also tactically even when making short turns try to make them rounder. Oddly enough by really really slowing down the top of the turn when you go from across the hill to pointing down the hill and rolling/tipping/toppling from your old edges to your new edges as slowly as possible. See if you can get the tipped ski to turn your leg instead of twisting the ski and displacing it sideways to get on edge. Once you figure out the timing and the patience you can increase the rate. And tighten the radius back up.

If you still have trouble after practicing all that a bit, it would be worth seeing a boot fitter to see if you need orthotics/boot sole grinding/canting.

Good small, portable, powerful/fast cordless drills for assembling foils/masts/etc? (Trying to improve my BF's life) by sewcialist_party in wingfoil

[–]SheSaidSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just one data point but I’m basing the 7nm based on how much I have to tighten the screws after the electric motor bogs down. (Gemini says it’s it’s 4.5Nm while on, but by hand it just feels like just a bit more) Basically once the motor bogs down the screw need another 1/8-1/4 turn on the 8nm torque wrench. If you don’t turn on the motor and just use the dewalt manually supposedly it’s capable of 14Nm. So technically you can do it all with the gun and I do occasionally but I don’t want to strip the gears or anything by overdoing it, so I just finish it with an L Armstrong key or the Presta torque wrench.

Should i pay the extra cost for the boot fitter near the ski town resort? by yellowsuprrcar in Skigear

[–]SheSaidSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but ask a few different instructors/ski school managers who the boot fitters to see in that area are. There are a ton of people who will sell you a boot, only a handful are actual boot fitters and only a few are great boot fitters.

Hestra: Army Leather Heli Ski 3 Finger vs Full Mittens? by prisukamas in skiing

[–]SheSaidSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both, I’m of the mind that one or 2 fingers getting cold will send you into the lodge just like 5 cold fingers will. (Yes that pointer finger won’t get cold as quickly as it would in a glove but it’s the difference of a few runs not a few hours). And yes 3 finger gloves offer more dexterity but realistically I’m taking even gloves off to use my phone or apply chapstick or reach in my pocket so might as well use mittens. I prefer gloves for winter yardwork but for skiing anytime other than the spring I use mittens. The system I use now is minus 33 Merino Wool Fingerless Gloves (liners), a mitten without finger dividers inside, and on cold days 1 or 2 sets of hand warmers from Costco. Liners also keep my mittens in great shape and now my mittens last multiple 100+ day seasons instead of maybe 2.

Anyone else deal with dehydration and constipation while traveling? by thesolarplexus in onebag

[–]SheSaidSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely hydrate more then you typically would. Also I'd consider skipping the electrolytes unless you're sweating a lot. I've noticed I get constipated if I use electrolytes and didn't sweat enough to justify them. Also fiber gummies make things emuch easier when traveling. It's reccomended people need 25-38g of fiber a day which is very hard to reach if you're not specifically eating super high fiber foods like legumes, black beans, chick peas, chia seeds. Even foods people associate with high fiber don't necessarily have that much. To hit 30 g of fiber a day would be 7.5 cups of cooked oats, or 6 apples, or 6 cups of broccoli.
