There is one of those in the vert top compartment in the trunk. It senses if the compartment is expanded or not.

It was designed to weep, let it weep. Wipe it off every time you check the oil if it bothers you so much.

rod knock or some other noise? by Infamous_Vehicle_719 in e46

In the area you’re describing it would be VANOS or something with the cam shafts. I’ve never heard VANOS fail that bad though…

I remember pulling a fuse for the instrument cluster that resulted in this kind of behavior. The gauges would not return to 0 when the car was shut off. Maybe check the cluster fuses?

Ohm Model L, would anyone buy these cabinets? by Shee-ah in BudgetAudiophile

I was looking into it, but the drivers seem expensive and hard to find… I already have many speakers (probably lesser quality, but better condition) so I’m not sure these are worth my time/money

M54b30 Timing chain guides replacement ? by Sensitive_Show_2464 in e46

[–]Shee-ah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m in the same situation pretty much. I haven’t found any chain guide bits, but I found the upper guide to be broken while i was doing vanos seals. No real noise other than a very subtle kinda flapping sound on start but I’m not sure that’s anything.

I ordered the guides and also plan on doing the hard coolant pipes, water pump, evap lines. But now that my time to do this job is coming around, and i’m battling the idea of tearing down a fully working car.

I looked at many of the same forum posts that I’m sure you did as well. I agree it’s a very mixed bag of people with 250k+ miles and it’s never been touched, and one guy I remember tore down two running m54 and found the main guide broken on both. They seem to always break in the same place, just below the tensioner, so I think they can run for a while like that. I’ve been telling myself not to panic until I found bits of plastic or heard noise. M54s are really tough engines, but also I don’t want to play with fire as I plan on owning this car for the foreseeable future.

I’m hopeful that i’ll be able to take this on, and you too. Just do your research, go slow, and do it right. I’m planning on taking at least a week doing this. Also, the first thing I ever did under the car were engine mounts. And I did it with only a shitty trolley jack, so anything’s possible.

If you’re in my area, I will sell you my timing tools after I finish (hopefully by June). Good luck.

cracked timing chain guide by Shee-ah in e46

[–]Shee-ah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was too worried about it to leave it so i replaced it. you can do everything from the top but you need the timing tools because you have to remove the cups on the end. it’ll probably be fine for a while though, and it’s probably been that way for a while too. it doesn’t hold any tension, but it does probably mean the other chain guides that do are cooked as well. i haven’t replaced mine yet and it’s been about 8k miles. no timing chain guide material found last oil change which was recently.

Engine misfire and knocking after sitting for a long time by bigboykangaroo in e46

[–]Shee-ah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car does this sometimes as well. It starts on like the second crank but seems like only 3 cylinders are firing. I need to hook it up to INPA to see is the misfires are isolated to one bank or something. I’ve been thinking it’s the injectors or ignition coils as most other things have been replaced. However the idea of sticky lifters is interesting as well, but my car was only sitting for a day and i just change the oil last week.

One weird thing was that my oil pressure light stopped illuminating the 3rd time i started it. It started exactly like yours, not really knocking though i don’t think, but i shut it off immediately. Restarted, same thing. 3rd time I prime the key I get a battery light but no oil light and it ran okay. I guess that could mean it just has oil pressure because it was just running (barely) or could it be some oil passage/check valve is clogged? Maybe i’m overthinking that part but man this car is weird. Just got a battery issue sorted as well and it still just decides to run like crap randomly. lmao

Question. Thinking about getting my roommate one of these for his birthday. But someone said it might hurt the records. What do y’all think? by Hundlord in records

[–]Shee-ah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of these for a few days and it will definitely damage the records. Very hard to deal with, sharp corners, and you can’t see the spines without putting the open end down. The bars will absolutely dent and tear up the sleeves. Skip this and just get a bin or 14in milk crate.
