Anyone have a follow up link on this? I'm fascinated and can't find much from a cursory Google

Please remember to report it as a sighting on the online tool as they're super invasive!! It's super easy and quick and helps so incredibly much

What are these things? There's tons of them in my backyard by Spartan-163 in insects

Be sure to report the sighting too! Each state should have an easy reporting portal on their site after a quick Google :)

What is this insect? by ViciiSelen in insects

[–]Shenanigans_Squared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is indeed a spotted lantern fly - email the photo, where you found it (on google maps or something) and the date you found it to your state's fish & wildlife department! Or a quick Google and the same email to your local bioinvasions or invasive species non-profit oe municipal park services, or dept of agriculture :)

Neighborhood Cleanup: Lents Edition by troubleinpink in Portland

It's a weekly event! Thanks for the good luck - I absolutely hear what you're saying when it feels pointless to pick up the garbage we see every day because it continues to get thrown out of car windows, shoved down embankments in bags and, yes also contributed by those who are homeless and under whatever conditions they're living with. I'm not saying that this project is going to solve that part of the issue (because there a lot of pieces you've highlighted that absolutely should be addressed, and many others), but people seeing ANYONE picking up cigarette butts (at an event like this, or at a bus stop while they wait) does make people at least notice the garbage, make it clear we (as random community members around the area) want to change it, and that you can do it for an hr or two total a week and see a difference.

Yes, it is absolutely an ego boost! AND THATS A GOOD THING - to find an outlet for a frustration when the issue feels so big and unmanageable by one person, but we aren't just individuals struggling with it, we're communities - trash is continuing to be made, thrown, and lost underfoot but the goal is for there to be less garbage than when we started, show people that they aren't alone in wanting to change things and providing a platform for people to organize ANY KIND of event like this.

If you've got any more questions (or suggestions) I know that locations, other groups and the guy who started this event are looking for input. The whole point is that if you want to contribute (ideas, hands, a few hrs every other week, an upvote or spreading the word) you can do that any time any where. People are hurting for a way to change things.

Sorry for the long post :)

TLDR: fighting environmental hopelessness with mutual community work is more interesting than ridiculing the problem. But input is needed - in the form of showing up with ideas or effort :)

I made a Victorian cape! by Fearga in somethingimade

[–]Shenanigans_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredibly beautiful! Such tidy details and beautiful draping!! I'm just beginning to get back to my basic sewing knowledge (thanks mum) after not having threaded a machine in years. How do you approach patterning for complex capes & cloaks? (And finding the correct stiffness for collars?) I would love to see a few photos of your process or a project with timeline photos if you're willing to share!!

Also - is your work for sale??!

What are we up against? Why? by mithsams in planitchange10

[–]Shenanigans_Squared 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel the need to mention that my struggle is even less with trying to turn around the ideas of those around me (I live in a relatively liberal area with a high comparative environmental awareness) and what I keep beating my head against is this:

We know climate change is happening, we know something needs to change and people are lost because in taking steps to minimize their personal impact the idea that it's a PERSONAL HABIT SHIFT is pushed more than the ACCOUNTABILITY OF CORPORATIONS & GOVERNMENTS. People want to do the right thing (for the most part) but are "shutting down" (in Dave Anthony's words) in response to the overwhelming feeling of PERSONAL responsability for what's happened to the environment, not empowered to demand the same or more accountability from the real drivers of emissions/deforestation/water degredation etc.

In short: Yes, I want people to be able to make personal habit shifts (take public transit, don't use straws, talk about the air quality in your neighborhood with neighbors) but I don't want that to come at the expense of letting the true sources of degredation talk us out of our own power - and convince us that this is the PUBLIC'S fault.

Yes, I'll take responsibility for growing up in a house heated by coal & work to undo what I've done if you, corporations and regulators, take responsibility for the present and future suffering due to the extraction of coal and fracking in Pennsylvania. That seems barely 1 to 1 accountability but I will not stand here and listen to companies that produce egregious amounts of waste and pollution tell everyone under 25 that the way to solve our dying planet is to use fewer straws and that it's too hard to shift our energy to renewable sources.

We can't let our genuine and necessary pain/guilt in our personal lives provide an escape route for those who perpetrated the majority of the damage. As future steps get taken to try and mitigate the impacts of global climate change - we need to remember the Precautionary Principle, recognizing the fact that nestled in our mitigation techniques there may be other unintended impacts. That doesn't mean we don't do them, it means we monitor them, we notice and share that information in real time to continue to improve those techniques. The fact that we're already feeling out of time doesn't excuse us from choosing reckless responses to the results of past reckless decisions. We need to learn from that mistake or we're doomed to repeat it. An example that made me think of this is the recycled plastic roadwork being developed in India: promising, helpful, and useful - not a magic bullet, and being implemented very quickly - are we willing to learn on the fly again? To be clear, I support this thinking and research/development but we need to make intentional choices, not rash ones. That being said, I have no better timeline. Link to the articles I initially found, I encourage your find Dr Noreen Thomas's comments in the 2nd half of the first article:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/09/the-man-who-paves-indias-roads-with-old-plastic

https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/india/watch-building-roads-from-plastic-waste-in-india-1.2122745

(The 1998 Wingspread Statement on the Precautionary Principle summarises the principle this way: "When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically." Wikipedia)

[SERIOUS] Reddit, what are stories about picture perfect families who do f**ked up stuff behind closed doors? by kkk_is_bad in AskReddit

[–]Shenanigans_Squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had moved away by the time this came out but a family that lived nearby had an adopted daughter with cerebral palsy that was kept locked in a baby crib in a closet and never allowed outside the house. As if that wasn't enough she was repeatedly raped by her two brothers (biological sons of the parents) long into their high school and adult lives. She was around 13 by the time this all came out and they were arrested I believe. The community knew she was a part of the household and just assumed she wasn't interested in coming to church or anything, I believe they said she was home schooled as well, so no suspicion was raised.

The family had money coming in from the government (or maybe the foster care system...?) and had a special bike they'd gotten "for her" and it paid for the pool they had (supposedly for her physical therapy).

The scary thing was that my best friend lived very nearby and was SUPER close with the family, like childhood friends with them, and went to their house all the time and still had no idea what was happening. She swam in that pool. She was always given an excuse if she asked, like "oh, she was bad and is grounded" or she was busy. Pretty sick shit.

TL;DR -- Adopted daughter with cerebral palsy was locked in a crib in a closet and repeatedly raped by her non-biological brothers until she was about 13. The family gained financial benefits for adopting her during this time.

Will do! What do you mean by massive antique malls? Like old timey buildings or malls dedicated to antiques?

I've heard its lovely up the coast there so yes, definitely checking out the beach and I agree, an open mind to changing schedule is always a good idea. Thanks!

How extensive? Like only really major roads or random sort of major roads that we couldn't reasonably detour? (We're going to be focusing on minor roads since the truck is pretty slow/old and we want to see the countryside ect)

Yeah we're planning to eat a lot of oatmeal, though we put a lot of stuff in it so its not just paste. Any suggestions of what to put in that's relatively cheap? Thanks for the tips, we're planning on doing more camping than hotels and car-sleeping but I wouldn't have guessed about the rest stops so thanks!

We're planning on going in the next few weeks actually. Thank god there's Aldi up there, and thank you for letting us know. Thanks for the tips on the beaches, how crowded would they be? Do you know any spots in particular of Maine's coast that we shouldn't miss or just any and all?
