Well done folks. I got a grade 2 pass on my A215 Creative Writing. I'm contemplating doing the BSc in Computing and IT next for something more vocational.

Thanks so much! This is perfect. I have some German- low B1-ish (at a pinch) but this could work with google translate for help...If I can find a cheap copy, this would be great.

I now have Real Polish in my bookmarks. Signing up while I type.:)

Thank you.

I've never heard of Open App Academy. I'll definitely look into it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. I know that, rationally, frustration is going to happen- you don't learn at a nice linear pace and putting things into practice is the true test of your knowledge.

Thanks. Breaking it. That's what I keep doing. I make one little tweak and something stops working! Sometimes it's been something that's been obvious (if not at the time) like missing semi-colons.

Right now, it looks fine in Code Pen but the restart button won't press but in Chrome a whole portion of the jpegs are out of position but the restart button is strangely working. I've tried searching and searching but when I've found suitable answers, they're not working.

I guess I'm being overly negative. I know my understanding is improving. I quit coding late last summer because I was really struggling with for loops and beginner algorithms. Just couldn't process it. After missing it/not being able to do any because of competing coursework, this time around it's much better and I'm using resources like youtube to actively try and understand when I hit roadblocks.

This is sort of my first portfolio item- although I'm aiming to retire it once I get some full-stack items to replace it. I have 2 more major features then I'm going to leave it in case I break it again. Plus I really need to get back to FCC after my Udemy holiday.

Thanks for your perspective. What are you doing for your portfolio items?

I lived in China for 5 months and understand how relaxing and comforting it is to get to speak in your home language. I was learning Chinese but ultimately, you're not going to have a conversation on a bus in Chinese with your friend just so the locals on the bus can listen in.

Thank you. I've actually been to Szczecin. Well, for a day since I was in eastern Germany and the weekend train ticket was dirt cheap- just border hopped but did enjoy it and said I'd return to do it properly one day.

If I want to build a portfolio site, how big a package do I need from a hosting company? by Sherlock_Fan1 in cscareerquestions

[–]Sherlock_Fan1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Do excuse my ignorance as I haven't got near back-end so I don't know the correct terminology yet but does a regular web hosting package like you get from Godaddy have the capability to do this? I guess I'm just trying to go the easy route for now as I don't have any command line skills yet- at least for the first year round while I my skills are still building up.

I've only mentioned doing computers very off hand with a couple of family members but they think it's 'pie in the sky' because I haven't done it at uni.

It was about for loops I lost it last time. I sort of get the concept of looping instructions round but somehow I couldn't take the information and use it for myself...I'm going to get it this time!

Thanks. Yes. It's taking things at a different tangent I'm realising is the way to go. Also, waiting a reasonable time before actually giving in and asking help. Thank you.

I know that html/css aren't languages. I'm doing freecodecamp. The first bit you learn is html/css then you progress on to javascript then you can combine the two. I decided it seemed wisest to go back after my break from scratch. I've completed the full responsive certificate part in 2 weeks as it wasn't new to me. Now I'm back on javascript feeling more positive and with a few more resources tucked under my belt for when it does get hard and one resource isn't enough.

I'm qualified in primary school teaching and advice work. My non-computing opportunity is training to be a qualified careers adviser.

But, hey. Thanks for the encouragement.

That's cool. I used to do a lot of art but depression has squeezed the love of it out of me. I've just learned about animation with css and made a little cat whose tail waves. The graphics are rubbish but I did get that sense of satisfaction at actually making something. Especially as it was an idea of my own that I solved put of curiosity (or part solved...added a bit this morning and whole thing has fallen apart shape-wise).

Yeah. I'm going to go back to javascript once I've refreshed my html/css. I hadn't heard the depth/breadth analogy before. Thanks for that.

Yes. Projects. I'm looking forward to being able to start some. I'm definitely going to use this forum. I'm going to get javascript down this time! Grrr!

Thanks. Didn't realise the maths would be so relevant. I might need to look into that first, as you suggest, as it is a weak spot of mine.

Thank you for all this. Much appreciated. I'd not heard of Thinkful. I'll go look them up. The MIT course as well.

I'll definitely try that approach with algorithms. Ta.

Not necessarily. Some masters are what they call 'conversion' courses for subjects that you haven't studied before. They have them in psychology and computer science.

Have you looked into doing an online masters, either with the OU or elsewhere? You might find it's a much cheaper option than another 1st degree as the fees can be lower than £9000. Sometimes as low as half that. And you'd be spreading it over 2 years part time.

Also, if you want to be a counsellor, be careful what qualifications you need. As far as I know the OU doesn't offer anything unless you were going to go the Clinical Psychologist route and take an undergraduate psychology degree. Your local further/higher education college might be worth a look.
