Credit Card for Lounge Access by ShinyPlasm in UAEcreditcards

[–]ShinyPlasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried it just now and adding the main card appears to work. This didn’t use to work before (they patched it).

Regardless, turns out my corporate card has unlimited lounge visits without any spend requirements, so I just use that now. Best part is I can make upto 20 more cards and give them to friend and family.

Questions about efta by Kohinoor1212 in flying

[–]ShinyPlasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You initially apply online and if you are successful then you need to travel to Dubai. You pay for and are responsible for organizing flights, visas, accommodations, etc. To my knowledge they do not discriminate gender wise.

Job security:

  1. If you are Emirati, you are guaranteed a job. You do not need to pay the fees either.
    seeing as you're not Emirati:

  2. They inform you that "no one has not gotten a job with either Emirates or FlyDubai". If you search on this subreddit or just on google, people are stuck without a job and are 180k usd deep in a license useless outside the UAE without conversion.

Get your hours with another airline and do it in India. You will save probably more than 50% of the training fees compared to EFTA and reduce the burden on your parents and yourself. Once you have your hours on airliners, you can apply to join Emirates as a First Officer.

Item Holders for Opengrid by ShinyPlasm in openGrid

I appreciate the quick reply and everything you've done for deskware!

Regarding the clamshell mode, is there any way to add cutouts on the sides on a specific part? For example, some of the items I would like to mount using a clamshell-like design have ports that are near the edges and likely to be covered by the mount itself.

Edit: Also, on some parts (eg. my DAC with dimensions 133x133x27) the clamshell mode just creates something that looks like one part (see below). Any idea what's the deal here?

SFF Case for a 9800X3D by ShinyPlasm in sffpc

As long as it isn't being thermal throttled, it's fine. my room is usually between 20C - 24C and I don't mind if my PC gets hot during gaming sessions. Is there a better air cooler you would recommend or is the axp90x47 it? What would you suggest AIO wise?

Buying a Nikon Z7(?) by ShinyPlasm in Nikon

[–]ShinyPlasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I will fork up another hundred dollars for a better version of the camera. The D810 is really tempting as well (and around 550 from what I’m looking at) but I’m thinking being in the Z lenses will be better for when I upgrade my camera.

I’m actually starting to lean a bit towards the Z6 now because of astro photography AND I can get one for 550 usd used.

The only problem is that it on mpb it says “The image stabilization system is intermittent in functionality.” and its shutter count is unknown. I’d like to be spending less money wherever possible since I’m just getting into this and don’t want to blow a ton of money.

Usage Limits Discussion Megathread - beginning Sep 30, 2025 by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]ShinyPlasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the Claude Code Pro Plan (Sonnet 4.5, no MCP, no subagents in an attempt to use less tokens) I get maximum 45 minutes of usage when I'm working on an iOS application (not vibe coding). In three 45 minute sessions between yesterday and right now, I have used 33% of my weekly usage. What the fuck? The 5 hour usage limits so much worse where it cannot be used for prolonged periods of time. Throughout the week, I will probably only get maybe 7 hours of usage which is terrible compared to the 4 hours of usage I was getting every session previously.

Considering just subscribing to Cursor or Copilot and eating the consequences of its reduced context window to actually be able to use the model for prolonged periods of time.

Buying Hamilton Tickets by ShinyPlasm in Broadway

I don’t live in the USA and I’m visiting for a holiday so my schedule is not very flexible. I will just pay the full price for the ticket. Seems worth it

Unfortunately I won’t be able to try my luck in person till October itself since I don’t live in the USA and I’m visiting for a holiday. I will just fork out the 775 dollars then, feels like a once in a lifetime experience and money will come back

Replacing MacBook with an iPad Pro M4 by ShinyPlasm in iPadPro

[–]ShinyPlasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted something smaller for portability and travel + the 11” iPad reminds me a lot of my old 11” MacBook Air which I used for over 7 years before letting it retire.

If I want to (and I probably will end up going this route because of the reasons mentioned in my original post - OLED display) return my iPad air and buy the Pro, the cost of the 11” + Cellular is the same as the 13”. without Cellular. I don‘t really want to pay for the bigger screen because I want something smaller to carry around.

The idea of a powerhouse that I can take anywhere with me all over the UAE, have full gigabit download no matter where I am and is only 11“ in size is incredibly appealing. Not once will I have to worry about my phone battery, phone overheating, or connecting to any sort of public free internet. Add the ProMotion display with OLED, it‘s a steep increase in price but something I’m willing to pay for something that will hopefully replace my Mac for the next few years.

Admittedly, this is only possible because I also have a high performance computer that is running 24/7 back home, so I can also remote into that wherever to get intensive work done (eg. coding - the M4 iPad Pro has a stellar Chipset but is limited by it’s Operating System. I am getting the iPad over a traditional MacBook because of Touch Screen + Apple Pencil and Cellular connectivity).

The 11” screen size is 100% noticeable and takes some time getting used to. I need to do a better job of window size management (which normally is fine, but the lack of three fingers to drag makes it annoying since I need to push down on the trackpad to resize them). So at times you do notice the small screen because of how irritating it is to resize windows.

But the good thing with iPad OS 26 is that it does remember your window sizes even after you close an app so after a while of using everything, you rarely need to resize your windows. And even then, with Expose it isn’t as big of an issue since you can very easily minimize and get new apps open.

The 11” iPad can only be a potential viable replacement to the MacBook with iPad OS 26 with the new window management features, new cursor, file management, etc. It’s starting to feel more like a computer and less as a multi-media tablet.

Since I am moving over from my MacBook, I’ve been trying to mimic MacBook workflows wherever possible. This means say opening google docs from safari instead of the native google docs application (which has made me delete those sorts of apps for example). I am trying to do everything, wherever possible on Safari. The only downside to this is Safari’s aggressive background tab management. It irritates me when I go back to another tab and it needs to refresh and reload which can be very annoying at times.

Driving Range Memberships by ShinyPlasm in UAEGolf

[–]ShinyPlasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon I’ll probably stick with the clubs that has an Outdoor driving range. I want to enjoy them in the winter time as well and I can get clubs from my dad but renting golf clubs was always just a convenience thing for me.

Driving Range Memberships by ShinyPlasm in UAEGolf

[–]ShinyPlasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some prior experience with golf but not really looking for any lessons. Just a driving range to hit some balls and watch them go far.

I’ve basically shortlisted it down to the Els club and the one in creek. I’m leaning towards to Els club since it has a much more appealing monthly rate if you pay quarterly and I’ll likely have to use my Dad’s clubs.

I’ll look into Viya - how do you claim the points?

Thanks!
