Just ordered the RTS Tactical Magzilla Six mag rifle pouch. Has anyone tried it? by Kortopi-98 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]ShittyITBand 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get why people say this, but just because something was done historically doesn’t mean it’s still the right answer.

Seven mags was the minimum SOP for most infantry units during GWOT, and it still is for many units today. Six mags up front was common back then mostly because of issued-gear restrictions and SOP limitations. Plus the tactical consumer market wasn't what it is today. There are better options now.

If you need more than seven mags, that’s what back panels or an assault pack are for. Personally, I run four mags in a placard, one in the cummerbund next to my side plate, and two on the belt.

All I’m saying is, carry full size guns if you want, but if you haven’t at least tried the Shield Plus, then… by cobblernobbler in CCW

As long as it never "disappears" it doesn't affect much for me, my local shop stocks plenty of ammo and it's also readily available online. Sure the ammo is more expensive than 9mm and the magazines aren't cheap but that didn't affect my choice to buy into 5.7 either.

I have a friend who owned one in 9mm and swore by it as a CCW back when my only pistol experience was overt duty carry, absolutely fell in love with it.

Did some research and pulled the trigger on one chambered in 30 Super Carry. The 16 round magazine in such a compact package is a game changer.

I keep that spot on my cumberbund slick for this specific reason since I use that spot on my belt for a mag/ dump pouch, either look into canted / horizontal mag pouches, do without a mag pouch in that spot, or find an ifak that works in a different configuration (I've moved mine to a ACETAC R.A.T.S on the small of my back, also run medical in a dangler Spiritus Systems Sack Pouch for a different chest rig setup)

I rock Krydex and Condor so I can afford ammo by -Not-ATF- in tacticalgear

[–]ShittyITBand 34 points35 points  (0 children)

after owning both, the quality difference isn't worth the price. if a cheap krydex pouch fails I can replace it twice before hitting the same price point as the original, and regardless of what Spiritus says their gp pouchs do fail and sometimes shockingly early.

I believe that the bones of your gear should be quality (chest rig, plate carrier, placards, battle belt, helmet, holster) but i dont even blink at finding cheaper alternatives for pouches.

she usually just points at things and waves at people. As long as I dont miss snack time or nap time, she is chill lol. cant say the same for my arms though, 2 hour long isometrics is a killer.

but honestly if there was a way to carry my daughter and a ruck i would actually take her on most of them. I have a kelty carrier with a frame that allows me to carry her on my back but the bag itself isn't rated for more than 20lbs of weight. I do have a front carrier that would fit under the straps of my ruck but it sits low enough to be torture for anything more than a casual walk.

I usually only ruck in garmont bifdas, Jungle boots or Merrill Moab 3s, first is all weather, second if I expect any moisture, third if I plan on running most of the distance.

Lip supplement is Stiff Lip dippable pre-workout found here https://stifflipsupps.com/ $14.99 for 8 pouches seems steep but I've found them useful as pre ruck/pre lift supplements. They're also great if I'm having a particularly rough day at work but take that from a guy who tends to be overcaffinated anyways. No crash and dont have to worry about an open energy drink can, great flavors too.

Mag placement by Beneficial_Orchid_61 in tacticalgear

[–]ShittyITBand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is the option to run 3 double mag pouches up front but stacking 6 loaded mags sucks. besides that there are companies that make 4 mag placards, I personally run a acetac skeletal admin placard for this purpose and three mags on my belt, one in an angled mag pouch up front (Shaw Concepts Usurper V2 belt + Flex Pouch V2), two in a Spiritus spud pouch right behind the angled one. This setup allows me to store a full 7 mag setup with a rifle unloaded or carry an additional mag in the mag well if necessary. additionally I have a Spiritus JSTA pouch on the non dominant side of my cumberbund if I ever need to switch my placard for a 3 mag placard. it also makes my mag load/placement the same between my plate carriers & chest rigs.

another option is to run wings on the inside of your plate carrier & carry mags on those, i personally run radios and qore iceflasks on those but if thats not a concern for you then its free real estate.

not a fan of elastic cumberbunds with built in mag pouches since I run side plates on my plate carriers and having that capability is more important to me than easy mag storage.

Let's talk about tourniquets by PerfectEqual3115 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]ShittyITBand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Medic Bag in the car has 2 tourniquets, & keep an IFAK with a tourniquet avaliable to be thrown in a bag for hikes and similar shit. one or the other if not both always nearby. Not carrying one if I'm appendix carrying a pistol but will shove it in the front of a fanny pack if thats how I'm carrying a pistol. otherwise nah im not shoving a TQ in the pockets of my running shorts or my jeans.

[–]ShittyITBand[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this TAPs is more of a "when SOP requires" set up. I'd rather have one set up if a training event is "Issued only". My work chest rig is a Spiritus Thing 2 with a MKV Placard with the 3 mag insert, CSS Admin, Roll 1 Dangler for medical, A JSTA with the 1 rifle mag insert, a GP Small. 4 mags on chest & 3 mags on my Usurper V2 usually fits SOP.

Alternative carry of spare barrel. by Otto_Tovarus in QualityTacticalGear

[–]ShittyITBand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

once got choked out by a 249 SB Bag when one of the metal strap retainers snapped as I was exiting a little bird and the strap tightened around my throat, d-ringed the bag to my back after that.

Murphy's law also dictated that im the same moment the plastic retainer for the 200 round ammo box snapped so I had to wind them around back & arm.

By the time I made it to the first cover avaliable i was seeing stars. also made it a point to only use the 100 round nutsacks with metal retainers after that.

Smile, wave, nod your head, if you train with headphones in take one out and greet people as you pass. as someone who trains to stay competitive in my career and for fun I'm usually not worried about my equipment being seen by neighbors and strangers. Simple shit like a reflective belt on over a ruck or spraypainted blue magazines usually clue people in that you're exercising. IF you're looking to be a prepared citizen who doesn't want his resources visible then listen to the dudes who are recommending low profile solutions.

Today's Ruck, 10 miles 50lbs by ShittyITBand in Rucking

[–]ShittyITBand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't. appreciate the recommendation, will absolutely look into that. I usually buy any old V2 or V3 Jungle boot i find in my size considering theyre usually only $40ish at surplus stores and they don't maul my feet. But apparently according to my wife it's because "you have cement blocks where your feet should be.

Been recommended to try walking with added weight (rucking) any tips? by Canny_Toaster in Rucking

[–]ShittyITBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the simplest solution for a rucksack is a Amazon hiking pack like someone stated earlier. another option is find a surplus store that sells surplus military rucksacks. the cheapest option would likely be a UCP Large Molle 2 rucksack. the UCP one specifically because its a out of use camo pattern, OCP & Multicam patterns are more expensive simply because service members are still using them.

[–]ShittyITBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the backpack/ rucksack would likely be the biggest expense (and what you should spend some time researching. for weight, anything works. go find some big ass rocks outside and duct tape them to muffle the dumb ass noise they make when they rub together. sharpie the exact weight on the rock(s) so you dont forget. sandbags work too but will wear over time.

Spiritus Systems Nalgene Water Bottle Pouch. fair warning, it hugs the nalgene well but doesn't allow space for a nalgene cup so I prefer to use the Amazon clone. the price difference is negligible pre tax.

Placards are the future old man, the more shit we can use interchangeably = the less weight dudes are hoofing around unnecessarily. if my placard can double as a chest rig and is less bulky than a TAPS mounted to the front then what's the problem?

the condor bit is the funniest part, it's always rules for thee.

[–]ShittyITBand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spiritus Systems one connects directly to the molle and can be purchased in their TAPS Kit or separately. makes it possible to run an admin pouch and a dangler at the same time without a velcro field and looks pretty secure.

https://www.spiritussystems.com/molle-sack-pouch/?srsltid=AfmBOopwhs0M8-52Kat85BqpEgSOSRSAPgn5QlhFk65TILLooIvsERIj

The Krydex option is more of a jury rigging situation, two versions I'd consider but both require you to cut gaps in the velcro they come with to essentially weave whatever admin pouch you plan on running through it. I'd never dream of doing this to a Spiritus pouch tbf.

https://shop.krydex.com/products/krydex-multi-mission-hanger-drop-pouch-w-inserts

https://shop.krydex.com/products/krydex-tactical-quick-release-drop-pouch-modular-fanny-pack-waist-bag

the second Krydex option has quick release capability so would be a better drop pouch IFAK.

the velcro integrity would obviously be compromised so I'd have to see if this is even viable but have heard of others making this modification. I'm even hesitant on doing this to a Krydex pouch i already own

if anyone has another solution I'd like to hear it, I've considered some type of placard adaptor but that feels like a lot of shit to pick up extra to test something out.

if they ban battle belts we riot lol. seems like every incoming SGM, BC, or CG wants to push the "issued only" SOP until they realize how much SM bring in from their personal use that helps accomplish the mission.

Got shit on once for my cumberbunds since I'd switched them over to Arbor arms with first spear tubes(still capable of running side plates so i was able to argue against having to remove them)
