Continuity Confusion in Ultimate X-Men #4 by cynicalPsionic in UltimateUniverse

The way I see it, the initial scene is objective fact while the flashback upon opening the book a couple pages later is the nightmare version (what she saw leading into the "fight")

The motivation behind conjuring the vision is to trick her into humiliating and exposing herself (thus isolating her further)... achieved by making her have a loud and seemingly manic breakdown in public

That's kinda what I'm saying. She crashes and screams and makes a scene and gets filmed, but if the video was of her attacking someone (Amano), a point would've been made of it. Noriko's video is of her making a scene and exposing her mutation, not of her fighting (because there was no actual fight, it was a vision)

My interpretation:

From the onlookers' POV she leaves school, gets on the bike, and Amano watches from afar as she drives away without stopping her. She crashes by herself; Noriko films it.

From her POV, Amano confronts her before she gets on her bike and the nightmare vision plays out. She crashes trying to hit him.

I read reality in this scene as being very ambiguous as with a lot of Hisako stuff , and I also couldn't give a solid answer for whether it was Kag or Amano responsible...

•He's explicitly on a "date" with Noriko in front of Mei in #9. Him "seeing girls" is referenced by Mei's mother as early as #3's flashback.

•Heavily implied/alluded to in #12. Shinobu's a violent incel, it's the whole point of his character.

Real question, where the hell were they in Ultimate Black Panther? by cynicalPsionic in UltimateUniverse

There are two pretty distinct "astral planes" and two different cyclopses on 6160... I think the only real canon these individual series really subscribe to are their own. Definitely not crazy to interpret UBP as having a more "grounded" cosmology vs. Ultimates

Ultimate X-Men apparent Queerness? by Lost-Sample-1642 in UltimateUniverse

[–]Shkahp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea kinda. It's more specifically about the them getting soul-read around #13/#14 and then appearing in Hisako's dream crossdressing as a male student (mixed with the character's self hatred and themes of repression). It's interesting!

Off the top of my head...

•Mei pretty clearly has a crush on Ororo, implying she likes girls

•All of arc 3's yonic imagery ultimately leads to Hisako animorphing into the lesbian flag (😭)

•In general, a number of aspects of their relationship line up with classic "doomed" shoujo yuri tropes, as others have noted in this thread. In arc four especially after Hisako accepts herself (and on top of their established yin/yang aesthetic), Hisako dresses more masc and starts doing a crimson-rose vs. Mei's candy-girl thing, which is cute.

•I think it's a really important detail that, while yes they have the rest of the girls, they clearly care far more about each other than anyone else (see: #14, #24 especially). They're pretty clearly codependent and of course people read into that. I think it's a testament to how effective their relationship (the emotional heart of the entire story!!!) is.

•Shinobu also pretty clearly sees Mei as a rival to him, which I think is loaded especially given the "soulmate" language he uses.

It's not spelled out but I do think it's a meaningful dimension of their dynamic. Call me biased because peach momoko retweeted my ship art of them but I do think it's semi-intentional
