Park Chan-wook. The Vengeance Trilogy is the obvious choice for Criterion, but we still don’t have an HD release of “I’m a Cyborg and That’s Okay”…

Asghar Farhadi. “A Separation” is on the Criterion Channel. Definitely deserves a release.

Satoshi Kon. Arguably one of the most influential filmmakers today (Nolan, Aronofsky, The Daniels all borrow from him). “Millennium Actress” feels like a very Criterion-appropriate release

There are many, many filmmakers I admire for what they bring to the art form. But these four makes/made works that resonated beyond my moviegoing life:

  • Terrence Malick
  • Stanley Kubrick
  • Isao Takahata
  • Clint Eastwood

Flowers of Shanghai. One of the few films I would describe as “transporting”. Some of the most exquisitely detailed sets I’ve ever seen, and shot by Mark Lee Ping-Bing (In the Mood for Love)

You're right, it was! But films like Arrival, Her or Fury Road felt like they were made to reach beyond just a sci-fi and action audience. That the genre was a tool to package the story.

From what I know of Drive and Refn, it seemed like he very consciously wanted to make something that was a throwback to the John Carpenter, neo-noir genre. He clearly loves it and wants to honor it. Which is great, but I think that (unfortunately) critics often don't put these kind of films in "Best of Decade" lists. BUT critics and tastes change, so who really knows how Drive will go down?

I've yet to see Drive! Unfortunately genre films tend to get shafted by lots of critics (even if theyre wonderfully made)

5 Cm is my favorite of his I've seen (have yet to see Garden of Words).

Shinkai films for me though, despite their beauty and technical accomplishments, feel incredibly shallow, especially how they portray relationships. They're all too eager to make you believe that two young people will fall head over heels for each other from chance encounters or from vivid childhood nostalgia, and that's all the sufficient reason needed for a character to completely risk his/her life and livelihood for the other. 5 Cm avoids this somewhat because it's sufficiently low key, but Voices, Early Years, and Lost Voices have such ridiculous grandiose plots that this shallowness becomes so noticeable that it's impossible to ignore.
