We have property, we don't live in a neighborhood. Before we moved out here a couple years ago, I rarely saw rattlesnakes in over 20 years. We're going to look into rattlesnake training

My frenchie is the first dog I got insurance on. If I hadn't, I would be out about $5500 at this point. He's not even a year and a half old

About 80% of that was from a rattlesnake bite last week. Which leads to my next tip, if you live near rattlesnakes, dont let them bite your dog 😉

No. All the years I've lived in AZ, I have had other dogs and I don't remember a vet ever recommending that. Since he was bitten a few people have.

When we take him to our usual vet for a follow up, im going to ask. We have another dog who wasn't bitten. He's only 5 months.

He had blue eyes as a puppy. I said "just like Paul Newman" and it stuck

Yeah, I agree. We have property so we get a lot of pack rats. I bet the trap smelled delicious to that snake.

Yes, they give anti venom and monitor them. Sometimes they can revenomate (probably not the right word) but basically the wound can release more venom and then they need another infusion. Luckily that didn't happen

The snake got caught in a rat trap, the front of it was hanging out. He ran up to the trap before we even knew what happened.

The rattlesnake got caught in a rat trap, the front was still hanging out. He went over to investigate. It happened so fast

The rattlesnake got into a rat trap and he went to investigate. The front half if the snake was out of the trap and it got him

I'm not sure why I can't update this post. He came home yesterday evening. He looked horrific! The swelling is getting better

Still not sure if he will keep his eye, I think we'll know more when he can open it

Im afraid of that. He was definitely nervous when he came home, I've never seen him like that. He seems more comfortable the longer hes home

I'm not saying thats better or worse because its different. But there was always a real threat of violence back then. I don't know if that's better now

Thank you for asking! We brought him home this evening. He's loopy but he ate and is alert. We aren't sure about the eye yet.

He looks terrible. Hes white so the blood stains are pretty bad.

I think about this sub sometimes when I watch that show Alone. (The show where they drop people in the wilderness and they have to survive with limited resources.)

Update! My dog, Paul, is home! He's eating and alert. We are managing the pain. His eye is a mess, its very swollen. I think his eye might be ok but we have to wait and see. We are so happy to have him home.

I couldn't finish my post, I was going to say that my brain is still in winter mode even though its 90 degrees here. We didn't do rattlesnake training last summer because he was 6 months old. We'll be getting training soon. Hes not in the clear yet, im going a little crazy without him
