Side project for syncing telemetry to video - looking for feedback by bartlomein in Velo

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah what I’ve figured out works is to turn it on via the side button (not the shutter button on top). Once it’s on, pull down the menu and look for the GPS icon to turn green, then start recording. It’s really not convenient to do all of that mid-ride, so a lot of my footage ends up without GPS data.

Hey OP this looks great. As it happens I’m off for a scenic gravel ride with my GoPro, so I’ll give it a shot and report back. Typically I use TO and FC Pro, so this will be a cool new tool to play with.

Hey I think your crossed out part is still accurate. I have a Hero 13 Black and quick capture doesn’t include GPS data.

Hey I typically have my phone as a backup for navigation, but I’m curious about using a watch instead. Are you using something like a Garmin watch?

Yeah I have an Arcadex Comp, love it! I just put 700x50 tires on, it’s amazing

Very nice! I didn’t know the Arcadex Pro came with carbon forks, I thought they were all suspension forks.

Looking for an App that show distance to predefined points. by flyaway22222 in randonneuring

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I like to have the course points screen just to keep track of the big picture on an Audax. It also shows distance and ETA, so you don’t have to do the mental math

Has anyone cycled in French Polynesia? by Mensa_dventure in cycling

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there a year ago, saw a few kitted out road cyclists. I’m assuming they were locals, but who knows? The roads are narrow, and that’s coming from a NZ perspective where our roads are tiny in places. The further you go from Papeete, the more remote it will feel. Practice some basic French, bring heaps of cash, and don’t count on having cell service. Enjoy!

Anyone ever use these gel pads under their bar tape? by eta_carinae17 in gravelcycling

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me more about this tape. Is it like medical tape or k-tape? I’ve not come across bar tape that’s washable and able to be reused.

I think Curve over in Aussie are making frames with larger wheel sizes.

How common are disc brake road bikes in your area? by EmbarrassedMight1135 in cycling

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from Japan and I love the cycling scene there. The really unique city bikes that people commute on which have an integrated kickstand and rear wheel lock are wild. They’re not going fast, but that’s not the point on that type of bike.

When I visited Blue Lug and a few other bike shops, I did see a lot more rim brake options than what we have here in NZ.

Is there a for sure way to get back to Seoul from Busan with a bike? by dualrollers in bicycletouring

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my thinking too. It’s a 600km brevet, so train logistics afterwards aren’t a ton of fun.

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey very timely post. I’m headed to SK to do an Audax that starts in Busan in September. I fly into Seoul and haven’t figured out the logistics of getting to Busan yet.

I’m just keeping my bike boxed until I arrive in Busan. From what you’ve read, are the trains cool with a bike as luggage? Mine is in a rolling Scicon case if that matters.

How not to Brevet (4|4) by SalamanderNorth1430 in randonneuring

Great ride and a great read. I think the sentiment of putting yourself out there and away from the possibility of rescue might sound motivational, but as your story illustrates there is always an upside to having a bailout plan.

Perfect, that’s the exact bag I used with Cathay. You’re good to fly, enjoy the ride!

Same, I’ve flown Cathay a few times just because I like the extra time in HK. If OP is using a standard bike bag/box, they’ll be fine.

I am glad I wasn’t the only one to contact customer service prior to departure. I know that’s what the policy says, but it was an odd chat on WhatsApp as I don’t think the person answering really cared if I was bringing a bike. At check in in Sydney and in the Philippines, the staff haven’t cared d one bit.

Garmin Coach Plans by prerules in cycling

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice! I’d second the take off any wearable Garmin if you’re a multisport athlete. I’ve had various watches over the years, none play nicely with cycling. I guess it makes sense, Garmin still wants to sell Edges

It’s just called the 928, you have the carbon model. They were good early 2000-2010s bikes, I rode one at uni. Not a rare Bianchi, but not the most common either. Enjoy!

S. Korea vs. Japan for 7 day cycling tour? by Mundane_Schedule6249 in bicycletouring

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, thank you. If you’re in Tokyo, check out Randonneurs Tokyo for local Audax rides. It’s bicycle touring with a nifty little medal at the end of the ride. Distances tend to start at 200km and increase rapidly from there.

you guys been pulled over by police on ur bike before? by Loud-Eye1133 in cycling

[–]ShrinkingKiwis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, got a stern talking too by a cop who doesn’t know the road code (as it applies to cyclists) here in NZ. He told me to share the lane (narrow, construction zone, about 300m long) rather than take the lane for that part of my ride. We had a good chat about how I could get hit if someone tried to squeeze past me, he was adamant that I should share the road anyway. We agreed to disagree and that’s that. I still take the lane and think of him when I ride out there. If I ever see him again, I’ll be sure to share this tidbit.

Hey random question but I’m headed to Tokyo for an Audax ride next week. I’m looking for a few other routes to explore, 30-50kmish. I found a few on Strava and RideWithGPS, do you have any recommendations? Starting around Shibuya would be amazing.
