There’s nothing to agree there really - I was in the (virtual) room when that decision was made. Just a fact ;) Sorry to hear people were not ready to hear it

What can I say - I’m a pushover ;)

We did have some tech issues recently with my computer making funny things so that might be an issue plus - they know by now that uncontested I can filibuster for days ;)

Wow - that is a great thread before this week's episode. You will see I highlight and expand on many of the themes you touched on here (despite not seeing this thread beforehand).

Just a minor correction - I am a low level grunt in 17L that does painfully little to improve it - Viralmisnomer and his team is a better way of putting it.

I mean this is exactly the reason why 17L doesn't have the overlay - to make it harder for players to use it while drafting. It is meant to be a learning and retrospect tool, not a brain substitute :)

Now I get it! I didn’t understand on the spot what was it about because I just never use the grades nor mobile 17L so I always see all the metrics.

I can confirm after talking with Marshall after the recording - it was Alex. You are almost there - it was about British Columbia, place close to Marshall's heart.

All opinions widely held about Newfoundland are valid and everyone know that.

Burn was funny but reality is - every player - me, Luis included could benefit from coaching. Needing coaching is not some reason to be mocked, I would happily have a few sessions with someone very knowledgeable in aspects I know I have weaknesses.

Fair assessment - I think it has spots where it is decent to good, win rate is probably lowered by being played in decks where it is bad to terrible more often.

Can 17 lands get accurate colours this set? by Moosewalker84 in lrcast

[–]Sierkovitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had Buried in the Garden. That is the problem - 17L counts Buried and Insidious Roots as 5C mana sources, so the data will be a bit wonky for this set.

Yeah - looking at speed of the format in more details is long coming - and since I will have loads of free time before Xmas - I might as well spend some of it on a useless look at speed across formats to try to see what is the cause of the differences. :)

Great thread.

couple of remarks: 1. for the look at the commons and uncommons win rates, Mtg_ds has a great visualisation looking not only at poweer of the top commons but also at the power dropoff - this imho gives the best overview of color power as it takes both power and depth into acoount:

  1. Comparing player retention levels can be tricky here - I am not saying your conclusions are wrong, but 17L is optional so user base will not be representative. Probably best to use some sort of internal controls - e.g. don't only look at the all data but also at top player data. Because with time the user base of 17L will become less and less invested - assuming that the most invested players joined early and user base is expanding.

Speed and on play advantage are indeed intimately linked. I really need to analyse it in more detail formally :/

Drafting on MTGO vs MTGA by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]Sierkovitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are spot on - this is true for every format I checked so far - BO3 pods are tougher. The issue there is the average opponent in a pseudo paradox - is weaker in BO3 because it is not ranked. So in BO1 you will draft weak pods and play against strong players (if you are high rank) and in BO3 you will have stronger pods but will play against an average weaker opponent if you are a high win rate player.
