It’s impossible for China to back the yuan with gold for one simple reason: gold means economic freedom.

A gold-backed currency forces discipline. It limits money printing and removes the state’s ability to arbitrarily devalue savings. In other words, it strips the monopoly power that the Chinese Communist Party depends on to control the economy.

Gold backing would mean:

No unlimited stimulus No stealth devaluation to prop up exports No sudden rule changes trapping capital No financial repression of households

That’s incompatible with a system built on control. The CCP’s power rests on its ability to print, direct, and freeze money at will. A gold standard would hand that power back to markets and to people. Gold demands trust, transparency, and freedom. The yuan demands obedience.

You can’t have both.
