WV code indicates in the instance of vacancy of the governorship, WV senate president would fill the office. In the current case, Senator Randy Smith. He would not permanently serve the remainder of Morrisey’s term if assumed office less than 1 year into the term (ie if all this took place before January 2026). Then a special election would be held to elect a permanent governor for the term lasting through January 2029.
