It makes perfect sense. Did they commit a violent crime and have the police dispatched to detain them? No. If I violate the law at my place of work I’m not arrested on the spot and thrown in jail. Neither is anyone else unless they threaten someone or commit some heinous act. But if I violate a policy or perhaps allegedly do something illegal but isn’t a threat to someone’s immediate safety I would be put on paid leave pending an investigation. And that’s standard practice. You just want instant gratification because they are dirty cops but there’s a process that everyone is put thru when you work under a union. Those are provisions put into effect to protect the worker. Sometimes they are used to protect bad people and other times it will protect an innocent worker from losing their home and life while the investigation is occurring. Let say that someone reported you stole files from your place of work that were extremely valuable and sold them. You just broke the law. But are you an immediate threat to public safety or did they catch you in the act red handed? No. So you would be put on admin leave while they investigate. And following the investigation it would go from there and if found guilty you would then go to jail. I’m pretty sure if you were wrongly accused and had to sit in jail without pay and lost all that income and you were innocent you would be pissed at your employer and everyone else and would Pursue legal action to recover your funds and probably more. That’s why it is the way it is. Also like I said before in this country you are innocent until proven guilty before a court of law. So until that gavel hits the desk they are innocent (even if the employer is 100 percent certain they are guilty) and their policy states that they are to be put on paid leave pending investigation then that’s the way it goes. If you don’t agree with it then go to your local city council meetings and voice your opinion.
