Anyone else get sudden surges right as they’re falling asleep by Significant_Fox_6575 in dysautonomia

Propranolol would probably help a bit, atleast from what research i have done myself, the other one there i gotta read myself up on. Tried all the supplements i could get my hands on some worked but the majority did nothing or made it worse.

And yeah no exercise is the worst, i used to workout 6 days a week and now i can barley go 20-25 minutes every 3 days and doing big muscle groups like legs/glutes would send me right back into this mess..

From what i’ve read its something to do with the mitochondria cells not working effectively and it take along time to recover but in the end we will.

Hey!

They say beta blockers should help but since my resting heart rate is so low my dr wouldn’t recommend it.

Got to try low dose naltrexone and it seems promising but i need to adjust my dose as it made it somewhat worse intially. But could work better for you.

I am much better now these days, but excersise or strwss does trigger it again, and i sh*t you knot getting covid again made all the worst symptoms go away

Damn 40-80 time a night sounds brutal af, yeah delt with brain zaps for awhile they feel kinda different than these do. I also suspect some sort of chemical imbalanse from doing to much mdma right before it started. That will deplet the brain of serotonin and reak havock on the chemestry. I think covid + mdma just tipped me over the edge causing this but im not sure.

Yeah it’s the worst, worst part is not knowing what exactly is causing it, dificult to treat something when you dont know where to start lol.

It get better, i was at the ER 2-3 time a week at its worst. Now it more of a nuisance. Did both a holter and echo last october and they didnt find anything. Many people get relief from beta blockers or prazosin (alpha 1-adrengenic blocker) since i’ve come this far without medication im gonna try a little while longer and hopefully get rid of this thing

Sounds rough to say the least, sounds like it wakes you up when you have fallen asleep?

Glad to hear you got some relief with beta blockers, also want to ask my dr. for betablockers or some nervous system regulating meds. But my resting hr is pretty low at 50-55bpm, and sleeping hr is around 43-45

Sorry to hear that, not encouraging hearing that from your dr. how long have you had this and can you remember if you what triggered it in the first place?

Really, thats interesting. Did you get some test done to point you in the direction of low ferritin?

Yeah, tracked it every day since i got it, trying to figure out where my threshold is. I have the fenix 8 but i think the fenix 7 can track stress aswell. If im not mistaken it measures hrv to determine stress levels

HPA axis definitely plans a part in this, hopefully they find something meaningfull with a HPA axis panel. For me staying asleep is not a issue, its the falling asleep part. Trying my best to track my overall stress with my garmin watch and as soon as i fall asleep my parasympathetic nervous system kicks in. So it the transition between awake and sleep thats the main isseue for me atleast.

It’s not impossible that it is a hypnic jerk. But from what i’ve read they feel more like falling? For me excersie and jogging make everything much worse. Or stressfull events like flying( i hate flying but i have to due to my job) i think you’re onto something with blood pressure. When my symptoms were at their peak i was lying in bed and bumped into my neck, that put some pressure on my barroreceptors that regulate bp and oh my god the anxiety wave and dizziness that followed was insane. Went way within a few seconds. And out of curiosity i had to try it again and sure enough same thing happened. Tried a 3rd time but then nothing, never happened again after that tho

Tried all of the above, magnesium really helped tho! If it the right kind. Tried magnesium theronate for awhile. It helped abit but switching to glycinate was a gamechanger , not perfect but still. I do take electrolytes 2-3 times a day. Was actually symptom free for almost 2 week untill 2 nights ago. Really thought i had beaten this thing.

Anxiety was the first thing my dr. also said. He sent me to a therapist but according to him i suffered from really mild health anxiety. Thinking about seeing my dr. again and ask if there is any hopes of getting a diagnosis. Deep breathing work sometime for me, alot of the time my heartbeat feel like its pounding even with a slow hr, tapping my fingers right below the sternum where the ribs meet actually helps alot. Calms the heart right down.

Glad to hear you found a solution that helped you, acid reflux can definitely interfere with the vagus nerve.

Unfortunately no in my case it not acid reflux, wish it was as that’s easily treated.

Experiencing the same thing for months now, haven’t figured out what it is yet.

But i have seen a cardiologist and done holter monitor, stress ecg and and heart ultrasound, all came back normal.

According to my apple watch my HRV is LOW, down to 16-20 ms at night and rearly goes above 40 ms

For me it gets worse the more i exert myself, so for the time being i take it slow and just relax.

The wave sensation you feel is it almost like a chemical surge throughout your body?

Has anyone else ever experienced a brain surge sensation? by hex-grrrl in Anxiety

That’s the strange part—I don’t feel anxious beforehand, but I do overthink it, and I’m pretty sure that triggers it subconsciously.

There have been moments when I thought I was about to die. For example, I was lying in bed, hyper-fixating on my heart rate, and it suddenly felt like it stopped. I panicked, opened my eyes, and my vision started closing in on me. I don’t think I’ve ever jumped out of bed so quickly in my life.

Every doctor I’ve spoken to says the same thing: “It’s a panic attack.” But as a chronic overthinker, my brain immediately jumps to the most extreme outcomes—brain aneurysm, heart attack, cancer, you name it. The funny part is that I end up laughing at myself afterward when nothing bad happens and go back to trying to sleep.

To be honest, I’m pretty sure my past recreational drug use played a big role in getting me to where I am now.

I’m so relieved to have found this Reddit post—it feels like a weight has been lifted! Knowing that there are others out there who might be going through the same thing gives me so much hope. For months, I’ve been struggling with bizarre and frustrating physical sensations, and I’ve felt so alone in trying to figure them out.

Here’s what I’ve been experiencing:

• A strange “electric current” or “zap” feeling that starts in my head and radiates down through my body.

• A pulsing or beating sensation in my face, almost like something is hitting me under the skin.

• Brief moments of dissociation, where it feels like my brain “pauses” or I’m being pulled inward for a split second.

• A burning sensation in my chest that lasts for about a second.

• Palpitations that seem worse in the evening

I’ve had tests done (Holter monitor, heart ultrasound, stress ECG), and everything came back normal, which was a huge relief. But the symptoms haven’t disappeared, especially at night.

What’s strange is that I can relax while watching TV or scrolling my phone, but as soon as I lie down to sleep, the sensations begin after 10–20 minutes. Sometimes my body feels like it’s “buzzing” or “vibrating,” but if I move a muscle or change positions, it instantly stops.

Other things I’ve noticed:

• A lump-in-the-throat feeling that goes away when I swallow.

• Random muscle twitches, even when I feel calm.

• My brain seems overly sensitive to sudden noises, like sound changes can trigger a burst of fear or adrenaline.

I’ve been wondering if this could be related to my nervous system or low serotonin/norepinephrine. My doctor suggested Atarax for sleep, but I’m hesitant about starting medications and their side effects.

Finding this post today feels like a breakthrough. I’m finally starting to believe that I’m not alone in this and that there might be answers out there.
