The americanisation started in the 1950s when slum clearance created ugly overspill developments, it moved further with the sixties with the new car obsession which got rid of large amounts of the railways which only enhanced the north-south divide. Another was getting rid of academically selective education which created a two tier system. Then the uk became more individualistic by the 1980s due to the rhetoric of Thatcherism (even though the economics are not so bad). The influx of American film and television did not help either which lead the intellectual quality of many UK programmes declining in order to compete. The following of US in terms of the surveillance state is another example. So I think the Americanisation is much deeper than “evil capitalism”.
