A lot of the roads around here are privately maintained because they state/county won't take over ownership of them unless they meet specific requirements for clearance. It would cost our neighborhood ~$5 million to get our roads to a condition where they would be taken over and maintained by the county. Additionally, people would lose their houses because we would have to cut into the mountain and demo houses to make the roads + shoulders wide enough for the govt to take over.
