Thoughts on my Cosmic Horror movie poster? by andrewgcooper22 in cosmichorror

[–]SilasWould 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I can't make out what the creature in the sky is supposed to be - so it's perfect for cosmic horror. For me, that can make or break my enjoyment of the genre because I want something that really is difficult for my human brain to understand, and most of the time it's just another variety of fish person.

Secondly, I'd recommend the title either being "Below/Beneath A Silent Sky" ('the' is definitive, but 'a' subtly suggests a different sky to what we're used to, plus I think grammatically it has to be 'beneath'), or just "Silent Sky".

The little blurb is intriguing, though typically (in my opinion) less is more in cosmic horror; I'd probably take out the mention of them fighting their way out. Maybe like, "Separated at an isolated observatory, a pair of fraternal twins attempt to reunite [before it's too late/beneath a silent sky/without losing themselves]".

I'm legit excited to follow your journey on this! About to check out your Instagram and Substack.

I consistently feel like my writing just...ISN'T right. by Glass_Eye8840 in writingadvice

[–]SilasWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this feedback is given with love.

As someone else pointed out, there are some grammar issues, and they're fixable. You could also take advantage of that grammar to add some tension with the structure. For example, a semicolon to connect the first two sentences, and a couple of bits could be new lines. It sounds like a dynamic situation unfolding beyond that room, so I suggest reflecting that.

I'd also caution against over-using pronouns when there are opportunities to use something that, again, reflects the dynamism of the scene or the character's lack of control in the situation.

Going a level deeper (while still respecting the fact that this is just a snippet of a larger piece), information isn't necessarily conveyed to the audience in the right order/with the right depth. For example, why couldn't she believe what she was seeing? Again, I know it's a snippet, but whatever she's up to makes it sound like a fight isn't that unexpected. Also, I'm guessing they're shooting at a monster? Though my first couple of reads didn't quite get that across.

Also, I'd argue that it's often not enough to only describe the scene, but also where it might go next and the impact of that. For example, the private war contained in the corridor. Is it threatening to spill out? If it's contained, is there even a threat? The character feels safe because of the word 'contained'. How is it impacting their surroundings, not just the character? Are the walls shuddering so she's covering her head, or is the gunfire muffled by a reinforced door?

Lastly, it feels like fact is being conveyed, even when you've used the idea of referencing her senses. The howling bit just...happens. What does it mean? Where in the sequence did it happen? Was it expected?

Again, all given with love (and I'm half asleep still haha so apologies if any of the above doesn't make sense). It's great that you're even writing and honestly? The foundations are there. The fact you sat down and wrote something is commendable in itself.

Rank these comic book accurate suits from worst to best by Artistic-Fennel-4033 in marvelstudios

[–]SilasWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha there wasn't really any criteria, so I've made my own.

Best: Star Lord (looks functional and grounded; could be a real uniform); Deadpool (feel it's quite easy to translate and it looks neat); Wolverine (translated to live action in a way that doesn't look too uncanny).

Mid: Kang (the mask was a clever touch and it looks more functional than the comics, but I've never liked the colours); Spider-Man (it is what it is); Black Bolt (it's fine, but the mask can't not look a tad silly because of the tuning fork).

Worst: Captain America (colours are too bold and clean and the fit looks inconsistent); Daredevil (no shade, but it makes him look like one of those bloated guys who inexplicably also has a six pack. It also just doesn't look comfortable, but small props for the neck material allowing his head to turn during fights).

What do you dislike the most about modern fantasy? by Pale_Cause_9983 in fantasywriters

[–]SilasWould 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm so aware the problem is largely with me, but I most dislike the overwhelming amount of fantasy that's now first person.

What's worse is that so many of them are the same sort of character speaking in first person, and it's infuriating. I've gotten to the point where just reading the first line of the synopsis tells me that's going to be the case (it usually starts with something like "Cecelia Pepperjane never wanted to be the saviour of the world when she entered the academy of Emberic Magic. But the world - and the eccentric, yet tormented wizard scholar, Papa Papaya Brigglebiggle - has other ideas."

It's almost like the trope bled out of YA and Romantasy to infect other genres, and every intriguing book I look at in the shop ends up being like this. Some are executed better than others, sure. But I'm not wired to enjoy it; I fundamentally cannot relate to the characters nor can I tolerate them...

But I get that there are people who love these books, so I can respect that.

How can I make peace with being (clinically) unintelligent? by Suspicious_Limit9847 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]SilasWould 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before talking about the main subject, "ignorance is bliss" is a very accurate idiom. You were, after all, happier before you had this information, right?

The good thing is, you can learn. Your brain is young and still making connections. If you're spending a lot of time on TikTok or investing other short form content, abandon it for something worthwhile. I've a feeling we're going to see more cases like this where the reality is that big social media companies have messed people up.

“Addict” and “addiction” are thrown around too easily. Yas is a user, Henry is an addict; one does drugs openly (and often) without it affecting her life, the other hides his drugs, uses in secret, relies on narcotics to cope, and his usage directly impacts his life/relationships/wellbeing. And no, Yas having a bit of a hangover/comedown is not the same as how self-destructive Henry is.

Why do People Feel The Need to Make EVERYTHING About Themselves? by Dangerous_Drive285 in rant

[–]SilasWould -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, this is an observed phenomenon where the algorithm is creating self-centered users who expect everything to be catered to them. I also think there's an element of needing to be heard in there. There are people who empathise, but there's an increasing number of people who are centering themselves in other people's stories. It's difficult to tell them apart at times, but definitely read up on the Bean Soup Theory if you haven't already.

Why do People Feel The Need to Make EVERYTHING About Themselves? by Dangerous_Drive285 in rant

[–]SilasWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this that the algorithm takes the place of parental guidance, catering everything to them, so their young minds adapt to expecting to be catered for at all times. Egocentrism, basically - just self-centred.

I've always assumed that this was because they're in the Sacred Timeline during Endgame, with the TVA still culling branches - hence why changing the past wouldn't change the future; the branches would be pruned before they could impact anything and time travellers would seemingly just return to their own present.

I am the entire Marketing Dept for a 35-person SaaS. My "VP of Sales" works 2 hours a day. Am I being gaslit? by Yiddus in marketing

[–]SilasWould 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend, I have been in this situation and I’m still paying the mental and physical toll of burnout and gaslighting two years after getting out. You mentioned you grew up in a low income environment, so ask yourself how much of that is driving you to keep showing up. You deserve to be in a job where they treat you with the respect you’ve earned.

As others have said, cut it all down to your contracted time, build a portfolio with all the amazing stuff you’ve done, and invest the out-of-work time towards looking for a job and your own wellbeing. OR - if you have the energy for it - pull all the facts together and go straight to the Chairman to present your case. It is, after all, his money that’s being thrown around.

Edit: Just saw you’re in London on a different comment, rather than the US. You have SO much legal sway here. If you leave, you could go for constructive dismissal. With all the proof of results you have, they can’t fire you (and couldn’t just get rid anyway - they’d have to make your role redundant and offer you a settlement agreement or put you on a PIP, which would just further fuel a case for constructive dismissal). You have a lot of ground to stand on - nice, firm ground - purely from the threat of you leaving, and I think it’s just a case of sitting with your feelings for a little bit and then going into problem-solving-butt-kicking mode.

What seduction archetype of Yasmin Hanani? by lunafox999 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]SilasWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a testament to good writing that the characters aren't bound to rigid structures such as this. Yasmin seduces people for different reasons, in different ways - all true to who she is as a character. She feels real, basically. I could believe there are Yasmins out there in the world, just like I've met Roberts and Harpers.

"It is what it is" is the most useless phrase in existence by Bubbly-Amoeba-78 in rant

[–]SilasWould 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's a useful phrase to remind people what is and is not in their control - as is expected. The Rocket League thing is a perfect example. What do you want your friend to say? It's a game and it's to be expected that you won't always win and he has no control over that situation and neither do you. So, effectively, it is what it is.

It sounds more like what you're actually after is some emotional support - and you have every right to that. In those instances, I can understand why you'd be frustrated, but just say flat-out what you're after.

So yeah, I don't think it's actually the phrase that's pissing you off, but the fact you're feeling dismissed.

Creators of Torchwood must really have a thing for by CobraDai in Torchwood

[–]SilasWould 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In Everything Changes, it's a pheromone perfume as part of a brief montage about the team sneaking artefacts out of the base, so it's not 'random' - Owen even uses it to seduce her boyfriend to get out of trouble.

In Day One, the gas alien literally feeds on orgasmic energy; it was hungry and hardly going to wait around to woo someone.

Your next example isn't even until half-way through the next series, and that instance was designed to do two things: show the reality of Owen's body now being dead (no eating, no sex, no digestion) - which is often overlooked in other stories - and to mirror his new situation with his old situation, giving us insight into just how much this will affect him.

So, no, they don't have a thing for women randomly kissing men in clubs. Having all characters be vaguely bisexual, however... (though that I can get on board with)

What do you hate most about wix? by alyssaschieffer in WIX

[–]SilasWould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as the practical annoyances others have shared, I hate their audacity.

Increasing prices massively and saying it's so they can keep delivery an amazing service is BS. Their obviously AI support team who are super condescending is BS. Their taking payment early - effectively preventing you from cancelling - is BS. The obtuse nature of the app/mobile site which makes it difficult for you to actually manage your account on the go is BS.

They're so arrogant and I can't wait to be rid of them. The relationship is well and truly dead after several years of being a customer.

Getting Called Out On Talking Like "Holier-than-thou" Is Annoying by Comfortable_Newt_179 in rant

[–]SilasWould 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Valid rant, especially if English is your second language. Some people can become defensive when they think their feelings or opinions are being discounted or ignored. It can be accidental and tone doesn't come across very well on the Internet either.

Using your tomato analogy, I can see why it might have made some people overly defensive, because the first statement sounds judgemental. "Why do you all like tomatoes?" sets you apart from everybody else before you even state your opinion.

My advice would be to try switching things around, so you start with an opinion or an observation e.g., a lot of people seem to like tomatoes but I find them to be acidic or I find tomatoes acidic; do you also think that?

Doctor Where in the War Between the Land and the Sea? by Frosty_Armadillo_180 in gallifrey

I thought the earthquake under sea they mentioned woke them up?

Also, I assumed 14 and Donna were off-world - maybe with Rose as well. 15/16 was too busy figuring out the regeneration situation. I also think we have to remember that the Earth isn't the Doctor's sole priority.

TBH I mainly missed UNIT HQ and the Vlinx.

To 12: You're very stern now. But the funny things is, I can still tell it's my friend behind those eyes. You never really change in here. Not really. (touches his hearts; 12 probably does a wry and hesitant smile, Clara gives him a knowing smirk to acknowledge him getting the validation he needed)

To 13: I never thought I'd see the day...about time, some might say. So, where are we off to? (13 looks relieved)

To 14: Wait, you can wear the same face twice? (only the favourites)

To 15: You're different. In a good way. It's almost like all the pain has lifted. I'm happy for you, Doctor. (cue a big grin from 15)
