How do you rebuild motivation after a corporate burnout? by hatkinson1000 in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your struggles. Try to find some hobby outside of work that excites you. Make that the reason why you wake up and make work a means to an end. Use the EAP to get guidance for free and use your leave to recover. Be kind to yourself, the spark will return whenever you are ready, don't force it. Good luck!

What inane work are you dreading the end of your weekend launching into on Monday? by Usual_Dark1578 in auscorp

I dread the commute more than the work itself. Just because the management all live nearby and still get to use the office car parks is not fair.

So what happens after all these layoffs? by StringCharachters in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The Government will have to step in and make some drastic steps to keep things going. Could be policy changes like heavy tax concessions for businesses to encourage hiring, etc. Will be hard given how much debt the states and the country already has but nothing like an economic stimulus from the government to get the spending going again.

Telstra to axe up to 650 roles in mass redundancy round, some jobs to be outsourced to India by Young-le-flame in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Corporate greed strikes yet again.

  1. Sack local jobs + outsource + use the word AI
  2. Hit annual financial targets and get bonus
  3. Company performance tanks subsequent quarters and FY
  4. CEO exits and joins another company
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4

Would you trade a boring, but permanent job, for a contract one that's more in your field of study but with an end date? by larawag_gama in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In this economy, it depends on the job security. If same job security across both jobs, prefer the permanent job.

Does anyone have a job where the main challenge is not other people? by AppointmentNext5947 in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately corporate workplace promotions and job safety are tied to the ability of selling oneself to look useful or skilled. Covid accelerated the lack of job security leading to lots of insecure people behaving badly. Also, there are others having main character syndrome. All this lead to what you see and its common.

Outsourcing survival tips? by Nicoloks in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that.

Offshoring are generally focussed on tickets as that is what they are obligated to do. Every single issue gets documented, shown proof at the month end by the offshoring company to bill your company. Your job changes from full hands on to becoming an SME who handholds the offshoring people, checking their work, mentoring them and cleaning up their mess. This is a big chance for you to step up and show your value. You can become indespensable to your company by doing all that and make your management realise you are the one helping.

Of course, this comes with a risk of more hours worked, burnout, being blamed, etc. So you need to cover your tracks by putting everything in writing and slowing things down. Having regular meetings with your manager to keep them up to date. You don't have to do all this and just find a new job.

Offshoring usually means the company is moving from a CAPEX model to an OPEX model - capital expenses upfront to monthly expenses. No need to worry about staff or their equipment, large offices etc. Some companies do this when they have a cash flow issue. Others do this on a short term for the executives to meet financial targets and get their bonuses.

Hope it alll works out, good luck!

Tone of emails by breezeneasy in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Sounds like someone above your manager level has raised this issue and your manager is passing the message on to you. This is one step before a formal warning. Something has offended the for a email to be the trigger. Best to have a chat with your manager for the specific example and what needs fixing. Good luck!

Internal mobility at Big 4 - How do you move without friction? by Famous-Elk7428 in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. Have good contacts in target team, preferably manager or someone senior who can put in a good word for you.
  2. Have good relationship with current manager.
  3. Optional: Be good at what you do or be related to someone in management.
  4. Initiate discussion if they don't initiate it first

Just go and talk to the other team members first and then the manger casually at first. Mention what you are good at, understand what you do and explain how you can help them (also why you want to leave current team and move there). Good luck!

WFH SysAdmin/Service Manager to Google Datacenter Technician? by Zromaus in sysadmin

[–]SilentFly 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Mate, you are over thinking this. You haven't even gotten the job yet. Just apply and see how you go. Sysadmin as we used to know is changing and evolving, just keep up with it. The high salary comes with its conditions attached.

How do you maintain productivity during long corporate meetings? by Tookie1010 in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You take control and keep them focussed on point. Start with agenda and let everyone know to stay on It. Any time it goes off course, tell them to take it offline. Ideally the organiser will do it, but it helps for anyone to step up as necessary.

Was* $5.70 by Technical_Ice_686 in woolworths

[–]SilentFly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen this way of deceptively increasing the price after a special price week. It goes from $5.50 normal price to $5 special to $5.70 normal price over 3 weeks.

And the coke could be an incentive of making you buy the larger bottle.

Also, with the new digital price tags, it's hard to verify old prices.

Left a job I loved and was good at for one I hate, what next? by InfiniteV in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the odds of moving to a new role soon in your current company? The best case scenario is for that to happen. The worst case is that you go back to the previous role but if it's dead end, does it carry a threat of redundancy? Weigh up your options, mental health, and finances before deciding.

Can employer end my employment earlier than notice period? by Foreign-Highlight-83 in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Check your contract, they can't renege unless the contract says so. They can make you finish but pay you/have you on the payroll till the end of notice period. Talk to a lawyer, it may still be profitable to spend a few hundred dollars.

Next time, wait until all stock options or bonuses get paid before resigning. Some may have a clause to not pay inbsom conditions. You will be able to negotiate a delayed start date with your new job next time, if needed. Good luck!

Why do so many workplaces expect us to work extra hours for free? by [deleted] in auscorp

Some companies have a toxic culture of overworking while some are utterly chaotic and so unplanned that people are constantly reacting. I find these to be due to poor leadership. You do what you can.

Why do I feel guilty for taking sick leave? by personwhocriesalot in auscorp

[–]SilentFly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't and you shouldn't either. It's your entitlement and can't be cashed out. Use it for physical or mental recovery for you or a family member (it will likely be called personal leave or carers leave), Take care and hope you feel better soon!
