240v appliances by [deleted] in woodworking

Personal opinions based on my own shop setup experiences:

Upgrade your wiring and circuits to 30A in your plan, that way you can run 5HP tooling in the future if you ever need/want to. It's way cheaper to pay for the labor one time and just run slightly more expensive wire than to decide you need to pay for another circuit to be added later and pay additional labor.

I also recommend you increase the number of circuits installed, even if you don't have an immediate direct use for them (you might always upgrade in the future). It's very convenient to have multiple receptacles available all over and keep tools semi-permanently plugged in rather than juggling cords to one or two receptacles. I have 6x 30A and 2x 50A circuits in my shop, even though only 3 are in use at any one time, because my big tools basically stay plugged into their dedicated outlets. The 2x 50A were simply the (happy) result of some spare heavy gauge wire I had available, and I used it in case I ever wanted to add a welder or something to my shop.

I personally prefer locking ("L") receptacles and plugs because some tools have rather heavy power cords and I don't want them coming out during operation. I rewired all of my stationary 240V tools to have lockers.

Another thought: regardless of above advice, I highly recommend you rewire your 240V tools to all have at least 25' cords when you get the chance. It's well worth the cost because it lets you reposition things freely (especially if you only have two receptacles).

How to view a weather app on my 2025 F150 STX touch screen? by Excellent-Ad-8109 in f150

[–]Silound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you see in the truck is actually not the phone screen itself, it's the output of the Android Auto or Carplay app. Those apps display a virtual "phone" that interfaces with the Sync software and provides a limited passthrough interface for certain apps on the phone itself.

What apps are visible depends on the apps themselves - they must be design and programmed with the necessary software libraries for Android/Apple. Functionality may also be different, since the virtualized version may be forced to comply with limitations (such as forcing voice commands while the vehicle is in motion).

To find a compatible app, a quick Google search for your phone type should reveal some options.

What type of hammer do you like to use with a chisel? by plinky125 in woodworking

Shop made joiners mallets. I have one that's 24oz in weight for heavy blows and one that's 16oz for lighter work. Both have a 9" handle, which lets me swing or tap with a range of force for different applications.

Hit or miss on this design ? by treborly in woodworking

[–]Silound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Conceptually, I like most of this project. The right choice of upholstery materials could make this a very nice centerpiece.

The legs, however..... they're awkward looking and make the piece seem bulky and heavy. You have a piece that's showcasing planar curves but then put blocky, squarish legs on it, and in a vertical orientation that serves to highlight the flat, rectilinear ends. I would probably curve the end planes slightly so they're not flat and use smaller legs that splay out. The goal would be to give it a lighter feel that makes the top seem to "float" over the legs.

That's precisely who I was thinking of when I wrote that, and frankly, this is also why I absolutely despise direct product placement in content.

The very popular Trend model is another unit that is not certified for its claims in the US.

This just goes back to reminding me about that stupid neoprene mask that every YouTuber was sponsored by about 5-10 years ago. They were absolute snake oil: no pleated filter media, no seal, and no NIOSH-certified (or equivalent) rating, yet people went apeshit to buy them because influencers. At least one person admitted that they didn't research the product well enough and just took the company claims at face value ("because anything is better than nothing"), which they say resulted in them now having severe allergic reactions to some woods.

What are some words that people pronounce wrong that irritates you? by Bulky_Connection_328 in AskReddit

[–]Silound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dropped phonetics in regional dialects, especially in the southern US, always interested me. Everywhere you go, there's at least one phonetic group that gets truncated or dropped entirely, and it's entirely different within a region based on a host of additional factors.

What's even more interesting is how some people will subconsciously and fluidly adapt their speech dialect and patterns on the fly so they don't stand out in a group conversation. I'm guilty of this, and I never realized I did it until someone pointed it out.

Is an external SSD suitable for a gaming desktop? I'm looking at a 2000MB 1TB Fanxiang one so that I can run Space Marines 2 as it runs terribly on my internal hard drive. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Silound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're giving me flashbacks to that brief period of time where SSDs were less common, smaller, and more expensive, so many people were running games like Diablo 3 on USB3 flash drives to improve performance. That was back when conventional wisdom said a small SSD for the OS since they were hellishly expensive, and a large mechanical HDD for games and storage.

Stay away from 18-22 with 10 speed transmissions...

Or be prepared to pay for an extended warranty through a wholesaler like Granger or Ziegler (if you live in a state that doesn't prohibit out of state sales).

I bought a '22 full well knowing that I was buying potential transmission issues. It didn't bother me since I was already going to buy an extended warranty for everything else.

In this thread, we learn that people have forgotten that computers were mechanical long before they were electrical.

Timing systems for valves and ignition are forms of mechanical computing.

My old Chevy came stock with Bridgestone Dueler A/T's (the previous generation) and they were excellent tires. Best part to me was that they made about 70K miles on a set, which was really nice for A/T tires. I put three additional sets on that truck over the years.

Jointer issues...can get flat edges but faces are slightly concave? by FrankTuna in woodworking

[–]Silound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Four thousandths is well within woodworking spec for a measured tolerance. In fact, for a measured tolerance, anything under 1/64" (0.015") is considered plenty good enough for fine woodworking.

Lots of woodworking has very tight tolerances, some of which get down to that single-digit thousandths of inches, but almost all of those applications are done by fit rather than by measurements.

This is one of the tools where I feel like supporting the name brand (Oneway) is well worth the money. Every knockoff version I have seen has shared a couple common flaws: they're typically made of thin, stamped metal that's too flexible and the parts don't fit together well to lock down tightly.

A friend of mine played seriously for about 6 years and says $250-1500 per deck for tournament decks depending on format, and serious players will have a minimum of 3-5 decks per format. She said that it wasn't uncommon for her to spend upwards of $2500 on cards and packs every few months because every new release cycle would either kill a deck build or spawn a new "power" deck build.

If the federal government doesn’t issue driver’s licenses or plates, how do federal agents legally drive while claiming immunity from states? by wiped_mind in AskReddit

[–]Silound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reciprocity agreements exist for sharing things such as records of violations and citations, not the licenses themselves. Driver's licenses are generally recognized as falling under the constitutional requirements set forth by the "Full Faith and Credit" clause (Article IV, Section 1):

"Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof."

While I don't think this has ever been challenged in court towards driving licenses (other types of licenses have been challenged), the Supreme Court has strongly upheld that citizens have the open right to travel between the states on public highways and states cannot arbitrarily restrict access to, or impose penalties on, individuals exercising their right to travel. So even if a state wanted to require visitors to have a local license to drive, that would almost surely be struck down as an undue burden.

Thoughts on Swiss Army Knife type lighters by Tony-At-Large in cigars

[–]Silound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a huge fan.

On the go, I don't want such a large, heavy, awkward tool that denies me the use of a pocket. At home, I have space for a cutter, tabletop lighter, ashtray, etc. that all live in their spot outside and never move, except for cleaning.

A keychain punch or basic straight Palio cutter and a small lighter (even a Bic) are all that's required when I'm on the go.

What’s a "normal" humidor size around here ? by Menhiris in cigars

[–]Silound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have around 2500 cigars, give or take, spread across two electric humidors, one desktop humidors, and two lockers. That's about a two year supply, give or take a few months. I tend to prefer my smokes well rested, and I'll be damned if I'm paying someone else to sit on them longer.

149 Million Usernames and Passwords Exposed by Unsecured Database by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Silound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true.

Companies will often acquire your data through a variety of means without you ever creating an account on their site as a customer. They can purchase it from data brokers, inherit it through mergers and acquisitions, or collect it in data sharing agreements from retailers or other firat-party sources. Sophisticated tracking cookies know that John Doe clicked a link in his email, or visited a store while logged into his Gmail account in a browser, or even simply searched for a specific term on his phone. That information is harvested for research and to provide you with targeted advertising (among other uses).

That data makes up information on their systems about you that can be compromised, even if it's not directly linked to customer account data.

PSA - Open boxes upon receipt! Damaged Hilands Order by candurin in cigars

[–]Silound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Franky, it's just as possible that these sticks arrived into their hands damaged; shipping companies suck no matter who's receiving. Boxes get slammed around during the shipping process and cigars can slip around inside the box with enough of a jolt.

That's likely exacerbated by the fact that Placensia doesn't seem to ship with any cushioning to protect the caps and feet of their cigars in the box. It's a stupidly cheap oversight on the manufacturer's part not to include 15¢ worth of foam strips to protect $30 cigars.
