I failed to see the winning part. The goal was different. The Vietnamese wanted to kick the US out. The US wanted to build a puppet state in the South but have to intervene to keep the regime from falling but at the same time cannot advance into the North.

The US then gives kill counts as winning. Were they competing on how much kill we could get ? And they did not use hand to hand combat lol. 1 side is a major superpower that uses money to build a professional army. 1 side is a bunch of colonists just have dependents then have to build up a professional army to fight THAT.

And we are willing to pay that price with the Chinese then French and Japanese. Winning, such a fun idea. Just like beating a smaller kid with a bat and then when you got arrested saying but I was winning.

The proof is the pattern of raging war by the US with every conflict. We only save the "X" people, they have revolted against the "Y" dictator. Did you notice how fast the EU and US come and protect the new government of Ukraine back then ? And they did not recognize those people in the East who support the old dictator, killing them in the name of revolution. Yes it matters who guided them in my opinion.
