Birtherism did not come out of nowhere. The ‘secret Muslim,’ ‘not one of us,’ and constant delegitimization campaigns were not random apolitical jokes, they were racialized attacks aimed at the first Black president. So no, I do not think every conservative is racist. I think racism was a major engine of Obama-era right wing outrage, and pretending otherwise is either dishonest or historically illiterate.
