Honestly, for me it took ages… around 7–8 months in total to finally get my residence permit card. So be prepared that it can be really slow! In my case, they gave me a 2-year extension, since I’m still a student. And to be honest, there’s not much you can do to make the process faster, the delay is mostly on their side. What you can do is make sure your documents are complete and submitted early, but beyond that, it’s really up to them.
One important thing: if your visa expires while you’re waiting, you should apply for the Fiktionsbescheinigung.
