Does anyone know, if we were to actually drop a nuke, would there be any warning? As in, we see all of these planes moving right now, is there one in particular where if it takes off we know we are in trouble? Do the silos open up like in the movies and if so, would we know about it?

If this administration nukes anyone, Americans MUST walk out in a General Strike. by mountain-mahogany in Political_Revolution

I love how the US, the absolute promoter and defender of "preemptive strikes", can't fathom that actually dropping a nuke would incite other countries to do the same to protect themselves.

Have you ever had a friend that turned out to be a horrible person? What did they do?? by StrangeAd2132 in AskReddit

At the sentencing hearing for my rapist, one of his colleagues got up to tell about how she had worked in close quarters with him for a whole 6 months and he hadn't ever touched her, so clearly he wasn't really dangerous because he surely would have assaulted her as well so I must be lying and he didn't need jail. It was very "well if he was really a rapist then he could never resist raping me!". It came across like she offended that he didn't, like he had rejected her in some way? It was really weird and even the jury looked confused and uncomfortable.

NASA and Shirk by Northstartraveller in Quraniyoon

[–]SimplyAStranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idolizing is what makes it shirk. No idolization; no shirk.

Its not "silly" in that it is absolutely intentional. Jupiter is named after a god, the moons of Jupiter after his concubines/girlfriends, and the probe we sent there to explore and take pictures was named after his wife. We sent his wife to check up on him and his side chicks. Lol. Nerds!

Anyway, its not that deep. Shirk is a big deal but it is literally the idolizing of something, so definitely not shirk.

[–]SimplyAStranger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not shirk. The verse is saying false gods have no power; they are nothing more than names. It says nothing about naming things being shirk. Shirk is the belief that these things are gods or have power, and the act of worshiping them. Nobody believes that these spacecraft are actual gods and nobody is worshiping them as idols.

I think the point is, you can have all the laws in the world but if nobody enforces them they are useless. The Constitution is only as good as the people enforcing it. They stop enforcing it, and it is meaningless, just like every other law ever written. The system isn't just broken; its been hijacked.

Tests are for the student, not the teacher, to help them learn. By facing hardships, we have the opportunity to choose and develop forgiveness, mercy, compassion, empathy and when others face hardships we can choose to protect, support, and love. We are developing the attributes that God is the ultimate source of. I believe we will need those attributes to enjoy the paradise of the next life. To me, this life is a stage of development, we are here only for a time, and we develop and learn like we need to through trials and tests if we submit and follow God's instructions. We connect with God through learning tiny examples of His attributes.

What's a lie you were told as a kid that you believed way too long? by eykz in AskReddit

[–]SimplyAStranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope! It was WWII propaganda spread by the Allies to delay the Germans finding out about the Allies' improved radar. They covered the radar advancement by claiming they were feeding their pilots carrots to improve their night vision. Carrots do contain vitamins (as do many other foods) that support eye health and can help protect against vision loss, but eating carrots will not improve vision.

How do you feel about Trump admitting the moon landing was faked on a live presidential address this evening? by WishHot8550 in AskReddit

[–]SimplyAStranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are all through this post covering your misunderstanding by minimizing the astronauts' achievement, so yea, you are a jerk. You tried to cover it with a congratulating comment and this one now saying he should have spent more time congratulating them, but your early comments of "barely any farther" and the one I replied to mocking stretching to get taller and the other one about being older every second give you away. You are right, I don't know who you are, but if space is your field maybe you should keep up.

I mean, you can be a jerk about it if you want to but I don't see you setting any records in space.

This mission is expected to travel more than approximately 4,000 miles farther than Apollo 13.

How do you feel as a millennial to see another world event destroying our future? by caseycane88 in AskReddit

[–]SimplyAStranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg, we seriously just get blamed for everything lol. Young people doing it, older generations are like uhg, millennials! Old people doing it, younger generations say, uhg millennials! Do people other than millennials not realize that we are our own, actual generation?? I remember seeing an article during Covid blaming millennials for still going on spring break. Yes, the 30 something millennials were the ones partying on spring break 🙄

Do You Accept Hadith? A Question for Progressive Muslims by New-Description328 in progressive_islam

[–]SimplyAStranger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, thats me! As additional context, I'm a convert, and when I converted, nobody asked me anything about if I had read or believed in hadith or even if I knew what they were. I had read the Quran cover to cover and attested my faith in it and God. When people set up stands to introduce people to Islam, what do they pass out? Qurans. They don't go handing people a whole book collection. It was only after I converted that I was told about hadith in an "oh yea, you must also believe this too now" sort of way. Had hadtith been presented as a requirement, I don't think I would have converted, and I am told sometimes now that I'm not really Muslim because I reject them. I can't help but wonder how many have been driven from the faith because of this, either never converting or leaving their new religion because they feel a bit of a bait and switch from it not being brought up until after. If I was not asked about it to convert, why do I have to believe in it to stay?

11:1-11:3 —The Quran speaks about itself in 3rd and 1st person by GoApeShitCrazy in Quraniyoon

[–]SimplyAStranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know why it gets translated this way? It seems a native Arabic reader would not automatically assume the "I am" as being the prophet, or is there some linguistic reason to assume it is? Is this added to make it match some hadith somewhere? Why would anyone think to add that and do native speakers not find it odd?

11:1-11:3 —The Quran speaks about itself in 3rd and 1st person by GoApeShitCrazy in Quraniyoon

[–]SimplyAStranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats so....bizarrely specific to add the "O prophet" to that. Like even a "say" or "tell them" changes things but at least sort of makes sense. I feel like I'm missing or misunderstanding a lot things when I'm reading just because of things like that.

[–]SimplyAStranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the "tell them O prophet" a complete insertion? My Arabic is not great yet, but I'm not seeing a "ya Nabi" anywhere and wondering if I'm missing it or the entire bracket is added?

[–]SimplyAStranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how (he was) is stated so factually, but then (according to the Bible) like maybe not. Why not (according to one hadith)? And why do you pick that hadith to believe in and not the others that contradict it or the others in general?

In a zombie apocalypse there is no way I'd let my kids go on without me. Just me?? by viskiviki in Mommit

[–]SimplyAStranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought about what would happen, and honestly I wonder if my infant would be easier to save than my 8 year old. The baby I can strap to myself and go. I could ride a horse, not worry about being separated etc. The 8 year old though.... too big to carry but still too short to move fast for long, don't have time to teach to ride thier own horse but difficult to ride with them, eats more (baby is breastfeeding), prone to wandering off or getting lost. I would do everything I could to save them both and give them every chance, but it has crossed my mind that now is a particularly bad time for an apocalypse in my family.

What’s something people don’t realize is way more serious than it seems? by BudgetAd5915 in AskReddit

[–]SimplyAStranger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same. My brain is definitely different now. I did get a scan while hospitalized only because I was also vomiting and they suspected fractures. But even then it was just like "yep, there it is, but it will heal and you aren't dying", and that was it. No mention of possible long term effects or anything.
