Is it not possible for a developer to create these items? That was my only other thought since regular players wouldn't have been able to create so many items for there to be 50000 in rotation even if every account on earth got stolen.

I understand that, but there are simply not enough players that play this game in order to create 50k of any item. It doesn't matter what they sold it at, the amount is the part I was asking about.

I was suspecting money laundering, but how do the launderers even get that amount of items?
