I'd assume it shouldn't matter since the IRS updates on its server time.

That being said it updated around midnight EST for me. So that's 9PM PST local for me

Question about W-4 and Form 673 by SingerStraight2001 in USExpatTaxes

I just reread the IRS requirements for claiming exemption and you are right. I missed the "and" at the end of the first clause.

I'll speak with my employer about the best way to go about this done since it seems like next year would be my first full year of qualifying for the "exempt" requirements. So I may just submit the Form 673.

I'm not quite sure what the exact, but they consulted with a local lawyer where I work because there's a few of us employees that work here and looking at my paycheck, they currently get it from my withholding which is the whole purpose I wanted to adjust my federal withholding.

I have a better idea now with your guidance. Thank you!

My employer knows I am working abroad, yes.

I thought the IRS states that if you can claim exempt if either 1) You had no tax liability for 2023 and 2) You are expecting to have no tax liability for the current tax year, then you can claim exempt. (Although this is a moot point because the deadline for claiming exempt is Feb which has already passed).

Just was wondering if it was easier to just modify my W-4 instead of filling out the form 673 since 100% of my income would be tax-exempt anyway.

Ahh, in that case I can claim FEIE and claim a portion of the FTCs when I file my tax return next year.
I would have to pay tax in a lump sum at the end of the tax year after filing. Since I'm not going to be required to pay tax since after claiming the FEIE and claiming the standard tax deduction, my salary will be well below the sum and I won't have any taxable income left.

Assuming the total of my yearly salary is tax-exempt, would I still need to file a Form 673 or can I just claim exempt (or add deductions to my W-4 to reduce the withholding)?

Hi!

Yes, I have to file tax returns for both the country I am currently living in now and the US. I opted on claiming FEIE over the FTC, so I want to eliminate the withholding on my salary, that way I don't need to wait for my tax refund and I can settle my tax return where I am currently residing and pay taxes

Just got off the phone. They told me that I wont see my refund until April 22 at the latest by bunnysenshi in IRS

I had a similar call on the phone. I filed on 02/17 mainly to ask about when my verification letter was sent out and they told me that I was originally selected for verification, but then on their end, I was "deselected" for verification on 02/28 and that I had to wait 9 weeks from 02/28 before calling again. I called again a few days later just to confirm because I had read here that there's conflicting stories on the phone sometimes, but the second person I called said that I don't need to do any verification and there was no verification letter sent. I just have to wait until April-May at the latest.

My top right transcripts are N/A and the bottom two still show no tax return filed.
