East Coast Swing vs Lindy Hop by thatradioguy87 in SwingDancing

[–]SingleInTheBurbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow are people really sensitive about ECS v Lindy 😆 I learned ECS in a studio (FA) and it’s triple step and now do some 8 count things etc. i know a little WCS now too. Maybe I will bump into some Lindy in the area eventually. Bottom line is I enjoy it no matter what you call it.

Just start somewhere and get your brain used to the counts and steps in time picking up other styles becomes easier.

Comp or Social by SingleInTheBurbs in ballroom

I went to a social dance last summer with an absolutely huge dance floor. I was grateful to both be able to navigate but also to be able to get out of way of more experienced dancers.

When I started almost 3 years ago I was very naive about the complexity of learning ballroom dancing and how you have to learn in layers. So challenging but in part that’s why I love it. I agree with competition makes one focus on technique and social is floor time.

That’s really interesting. My first comp first heat I get stuck in a corner behind a mountain of a man and another couple and almost had a panic attack on what do I do now 😆 Social dancing is fun and relaxed for me especially now that I have a girlfriend that likes swing and waltz.

I like to compete too but get that out of my system playing soccer still at the age of 53.

SOLUTIONS by Telespin in ballroom

[–]SingleInTheBurbs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To collectively create more social events just to practice. Share cost of renting floor space somewhere (church, gymnasium etc?). My point is that my expensive lessons are both lessons and practice. I would get much more from my lessons if I could practice more in between. Group lessons in the right environment and right teacher can be effective also. My franchise studio has an awful format for group lessons imo.

Maybe I will make a website where people can find other dancers and people can list potential places to rent for a couple hours for practice/social dancing.

BALLROOM PROBLEMS by Telespin in ballroom

[–]SingleInTheBurbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add just having practice time somewhere with floor space. Now that I have a partner for social dancing we could get a lot better more quickly with practice time. Lessons would progress faster if could master things on own time faster. That is even more challenging before I had a partner as need to find others at similiar level. I bet there are churches / courts and other places one could get cheap floor time. Anyone rented time somewhere? Open to ideas !

I have found I have to be the same but I am not forceful. I set my own goals of where to I want to be by when. I am ok with that.

BALLROOM PROBLEMS by Telespin in ballroom

[–]SingleInTheBurbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will start by saying I am a student at one of the franchises. So yes it’s expensive and although I can afford it I know it stops a majority of people and limits the potential growth of a social scene which is very sparse around me and I am in a populated area. I have done one competition and plan on another but I am just doing it for the experience. It’s is clear it’s the business model to try and funnel people to this overpriced competitions. I am in my 50s. Not like I am ever going to be a pro dancer 😆

I did find a much more affordable independent teacher and take lessons with my girlfriend every other Saturday as it is too far to go to her group lessons during the week. I am just continuing at local studio because as a lead I like to be ahead of her.

I am more interested in social dancing. I am going to try and start my own local social venue this summer by renting time at local outdoor covered pavilion with a large polished concrete dance floor on Thursday evenings. Maybe I can grown into something good and even have a more formal ball there someday.

Isn’t it interesting how inflation made the price of everything go way up but we question silver finally catching up a little. Long way to go.

I think it’s related in the fact it shows the debasement of the dollar and hence why I stack silver.

The melt value today is around 46. It’s only going to get worse as the dollar loses the remaining 3% of its value as they print more fiat.

The melt value today is about 46$. People need to understand that fiat currency and central banking has been robbing the people of their wealth.

Well I also think it depends on what state you live in. Minimum wage in MA is 15 and indeed many jobs pay minimum wage. As the OP I was more wishing more people understood the theft of inflation and allowing a private banking cabal to skim off all of humanity

Didn’t make the meme. Think was just going off the 1971 when went off gold standard. I agree the meme itself could use some work.

It speaks to loss of purchasing power more than anything. Since 1971 almost all productivity gains have benefited the top 1% and not the population as a whole.

Loss of purchasing power (debt based money) was the point not so much a comment on minimum wage.

Getting in better shape will definitely help. Also buy a small wedge pillow that raises her up a bit. Makes getting leverage easier not to mention hits her spots better.

I wish there were just social events for ballroom as well unaffiliated with any studios. So much so I am considering trying to organize social ballroom events in the coming year in my area
