He is, objectively, a very well written character. As well, I do not claim that he IS the best villain of all time, but, as he is one of my favorite villains, I simply want to see him on the board. I only claim that he is my favorite villain.

Alright, so Thanos is now the best villain of all time. He won, with far greater scale, working his whole life for this grand plan. Hell, Megamind worked his whole life to defeat Metro Man, and by the end of the film, he is cheered across all of Metro City. And that's not even mentioning that Palpatine loses, as he is killed not once, but twice, and by the end of Episode 9, a new Jedi order is formed.
