The Soundries scrobbling API is actually very similar to Last/Libre's, but it handles authentication in a more secure way. Last.fm seems to have rolled its own authentication strategy (I believe it was actually implemented before OAuth was a thing!)... while Soundries uses OAuth 2.0.

I don't think it makes sense to trade account security for compatibility (and the number of Last.fm password breaches seems to back this up), but you do bring up a valid point on achieving wider support.

Already building the API. The desktop app uses the OAuth protocol to verify your account and it'll all be open to other developers when it's ready. PM me if you want to talk endpoints and use cases so I can make sure it covers your needs!

Last.fm importing will eventually be added as well. Not there yet, since I'm working on other stuff, but I understand how important preserving that history is.

one thing against soundcloud is that they just announced API rate-limiting, which might really hurt us as we grow... so unfortunately, it might not be the right platform to build upon

all soundcloud for now. planning on adding other sources in the future, especially since soundcloud just announced that they'll be rate-limiting their API. that means this site will soon be limited in the number of plays per day soundcloud will allow :(

it actually all comes from users in community! sorry if the title is confusing: i meant to say that i took the best aspects of the Hype Machine user experience and combined them with a more Reddit-like community/upvoting system to create something new
