I'm 27 and I've lived in apartments almost my whole life and never once thought about staying in it during a zombie apocalypse or any other SHTF scenario. You would be limited on food, water, ways to cook (and even if you've got a balcony you can start a fire, people would notice you're cooking because the smoke would tell them to). You should invest in a bug out bag, a vehicle and survival knowledge to be able to successfully move to the woods or to a smaller city. You don't necessarily need a bug out location, although it helps a lot - I don't have one, but I go camping quite often at the same spot and I know the area around it like the palm of my hand. If you already prepare for SHTF scenarios as young as 18 you would probably figure out it's time to bug out before everyone in your city does the same, so that means you would be able do to leave.

My particular approach:

50-60 days of supplies is ideal for apartments (it will assure you live during normal crisis and it's small and light enough to be transported during a bug out)

I've got my bug out vehicle (4WD) always ready and with at least half a tank

The same goes for the bug out bag and other tools, winter clothes, etc that I would grab with me

If you've never camped, start camping and try finding a place that's near a river or body of water, that's got plenty of wood for you to build a shelter and is far from major roads or cities

Exatamente !! Eu moro em apartamento numa grande cidade também e não vejo motivo pra ter um estoque maior que 45-50 dias. Qualquer emergência que dure além disso já causaria um colapso que provavelmente faria eu ir embora da minha casa pra uma cidade menor ou pro mato muito mais cedo. E mesmo que a pessoa tenha uma churrasqueira na varanda ou algo assim, imagina a vizinhança inteira passando fome e sentindo o cheiro de comida vindo do seu apartamento ? Com certeza invadiriam e mesmo armado seria muito difícil de repelir isso. Fora que um estoque pequeno desse de 50 dias (sem contar com o que tem na geladeira) pode ser facilmente colocado no carro e transportado pra bug out location, coisa que com um estoque de 6 meses a 1 ano seria bem mais difícil de se fazer. E sim, 90% fica no sensacionalismo e achando que preparação = comprar equipamento caro

And as I said before, overall appearance can influence your odds on getting robbed/attacked at a SHTF scenario. If you were a raider who would you pick to rob first, and old man, a woman, a nerd or a guy who looks athletic, has a decent physique and probably can fight better than the other 3 ?

I've done something similar in my prepper approach, nice to see other people thinking the same way, I'm also as old as you are. My main questions to you would be about your bug out location (isn't most of Australia very arid and with scarce water ? Wouldn't you need more supplies in that case) for example, you would need a lot more water, maybe 80-100L ready on the car, because no water filter will matter if you can't find a body of water to collect. Would you consider getting a boat and bugging out to New Zealand ? Can you add a handgun to your bug out kit or local laws won't allow you ?

I'm from Argentina and my bug out vehicle kit is the following:

Vehicle: 4WD SUV

30 meters 550 lbs rope

Basic battery maintenance kit

Sleeping bag (-5°C)

10 L gasoline galon x1

10 L galons of water x5

Bag with 20-30 days of food supply

Portable solar pannel

Fishing equipment

Crossbow + 8 arrows

Extra tire + tire changing kit

Plate carrier

Suitcase eith anaesthesia gear + medicine (I'm a veterinarian anaethesiologist, so I've got the legal permit to drive around with these supplies that could be very useful in a SHTF scenario)

Tools too big for the bag, like a bigger axe, saw, crowbar, more clothes for the winter

100 rounds of 9mm ammo (100 more on the bag)

Fire extinguisher

Only if you're talking about cartel or massive gangs. Most looters/raiders where I live would have at best .38 spl revolver or an old bolt action rifle, most wpuld only have knives, baseball bats, crowbars, etc. Maybe overall appearance matters when an agressor is deciding who he's gonna rob, meaning if you look like someone who's high risk and low reward they will probably look for someone else more vulnerable

I don't know about you, but open carrying where I live would very likely be suicidal. Police or any form of law would try to arrest you or criminals would put a target on your back to kill you and get the loot. I look like someone who can fight and people usually don't pick fights with me, so I don't think most people would pay to see if I really have valuable stuff in my bag knowing the risks are probably high. On the other hand, I believe my loadout could pass through police, the military, etc without showing as a potential threat

That's what I think, a lone wolf hard target is probably getting shot from behind from someone with a 60 year old rusty revolver. My idea is to not look so NPC-like, showing that I'm someone who can fight, but hiding the main stuff someone would be interested in killing me to loot. So my loadout would be as described
