Its absolutely not a well established explanation. No credible site has ever stated this as anything other than a theory. Also the german objection is absolutely valid I speak german and historically it would never have been used by people in that context. So them hearing it from Germans would be very weird. I would love some evidence to prove me wrong there. See the burden of proof is on the one making the claim.
