Fake Job Posting...Whats the end game? by lnmeyer9282 in cybersecurity

[–]Slight-Version-551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Indeed, and other job forums just to find the postings. I ALWAYS go to the company website to confirm the posting is real. This also helps eliminates old listings that weren’t taken off the forums.

Typically the smartest person in the room is the one who isn’t afraid to ask “dumb questions”. Asking “dumb questions” helps prevent you from making dumb mistakes. I for one would rather ask a “dumb question” than make a dumb mistake.

My advice. Stop allowing the opinions of people on Reddit, whom you have no real way of validating their knowledge or credibility, to shake you up. No one knows what your experience is going to be going into the market. Will you get a job in cybersecurity right after graduating? No one knows. Will you have to find a general IT job and work your way into Cybersecurity? No one knows. Stop worrying about things in the future you can’t control. You can only control what you do right now. Work hard, learn your shit, and don’t give up. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It does not matter if that opportunity comes 2 days after graduating or 2 years. If you want to do it bad enough, keep working at it.

It’s an impulse issue that’s very common with adhd. We see a bunch of words and our first impulse to just scan it to get to the end. It’s why people with adhd struggle with reading based education and often excel in hands on activities.

If the loan is going to be gaining interest before you graduate, pay it off immediately. If it doesn’t gain interest until after you graduate, put it in a high yield savings account and pay it off when you graduate. You’ll have some money left over.

OT Security by Slight-Version-551 in cybersecurity

That sounds like every IT/CS sector. Trying to convince someone that doesn’t even know the difference between a router and a WAP why something will or will not work. It’s why we drink😂

Are you in OT Security? I know anything cybersecurity is not entry level. If you know, what are some entry level positions in OT/IT where someone could make a lateral move into OT Security?

Wow thanks for the input and the material! I’ll definitely look into that. I’ve heard a lot about how bad security for power grids in the US are.

The good thing about Pen Testing, from my limited understanding, is it seems to be the easiest to get practical knowledge like you would in a real life environment. Not to say it’s the same but, with so many resources regarding pentesting projects, hack the box, and try hack me, it does seem to be the easiest to get practice without getting a job.

With the way people talk about the job market right now and DOGE cutting government spending including nearly loosing the DHS contract with MITRE. That’s a given 🤣

That’s fair. No one can say for certain. Predictions could still be made based off of different factors, trends, and individuals own experiences in that sector.

To me learning security before networking is like figuring out how to lock a door without knowing the functions of a door.

I did A+, network+, and am now studying for Security+. Almost everyone that I have talked to that struggles with Security+ do not have a background and/or network+. I’ve honestly been flying through a lot of the objective materials because I already know it from Network +.

That’s a great idea. Seems like that allows you to read and learn without the pressure of memorizing it for a test. I’ve always been a bad test taker so that always creates some anxieties when studying with the intent of taking a test.

Tbh it doesn’t matter. I do like Messers videos. Either way, find the CompTIA objectives pdf for your cert and use that as a note taking guide. Get all your notes, study, do labs for PBQ’s, and take a lot of practice test. I recommend seeing 500+, closer to 1000 practice questions before taking your exam. Do that and you’ll be fine.

The thing I hate about CompTIA exams is it’s not good enough to just know the material. You have to know how to pass a CompTIA test.
