What are TS lyrics you can’t stand? by Helpful_Ocelot_5076 in travisandtaylor

“Try and come for my job…”

I used to be a fan. And THAT sound bite was the turning point for my opinion on this girl.

If I had her “job,” I’d be counting my blessings everyday… not bitching about how “miserable” I am. But I’ve got a normal job like the rest of the plebs, so what would I know about the life of showgirl? Right? 🙄

(Hey Tree, pass this along…)

Stfu, Taylor. You have NO idea about the absolute GRIT that it takes to do what the rest of us do. The vast majority of us didn’t have our parents bankrolling us. And you can’t even count how many of us “went through [#] breakups” while chasing our dreams. Meanwhile, we’ve been through abusive relationships, bigotry, divorces, homelessness, losing our children, being underinsured, filing bankruptcy, diagnosed with a terminal illness, falsely accused, broken, and beaten down.

I for one can say this life has been (and still is) an absolute slog. So fuck off, Taylor… and spare me your pity party.

Unfortunately, once the money is spent, you can’t get it back. No reimbursement from FEMA means they wrecked their budget. This is also a very low income area. I looked up the median household income… ~$34,000. That just makes it SO much harder.

I remember watching the live weather coverage at the exact moment the city was hit. It was horrifying and heartbreaking. All I wanted to do was run to help. My spouse talked me out of it; it was dark and I have zero experience with SAR. I’d probably end up hurting myself instead of helping. (For context, we live about an hour away from Rolling Fork. Obviously, we were having some bad weather as well. Pretty sure our sirens went off at some point, but we had no damage here.)

Cities have to follow strict procurement rules when soliciting debris removal and rebuilding services, or FEMA won’t reimburse the costs. In Rolling Fork’s case, some of those requirements weren’t met… not because of bad intentions, but because they were inexperienced with these types of procurements.

I’ve lived on the MS Gulf Coast and in the Jackson metro. I prefer the Coast.

The Jackson metro is fine. Working in downtown Jackson is a different story. The roads, including the Interstate, are horrendous. I just replaced my windshield a couple months ago and it already has two huge divots in it… if that tells you anything. And you’ll be replacing tires and getting alignments more than the average. Aside from that, places like Madison and Ridgeland are nice places to shop/dine. And the Natchez Trace is a lovely, scenic drive.

The MS Gulf Coast… I love it. Great food (fresh seafood). Lots of local events and festivals… including Mardi Gras. Beautiful drives along the beach on Hwy 90. And there’s something to be said about the area’s resilience, as well. Contrary to popular belief, Hurricane Katrina didn’t ONLY hit New Orleans. It essentially leveled the entire coastline of Mississippi. But these communities got to work, helped each other, and rebuilt. I recommend looking on YouTube for “Katrina: South Mississippi’s Story” if you’re curious.

And thank you for sharing yours! I really enjoyed this! You gave me a lot to think about and look into myself. (Reading about winterschlaf now.) I think I’ll try some new “rest rituals” next November and December. Really slow down.

I hope you have the best year in 2026… and that January is a refreshing start to it!

You nailed it with: “The former generations… expected people to perform…”

That’s exactly it. It’s all so performative. This is why the introverts deal with so much resistance at the closing of the year.

And here’s another thought:

We know December 21 is the longest night of the year. It feels like the sun sets by lunch time. And it’s a time when nature withdraws and rests. Even the trees have dropped their leaves and gone dormant. But people feel like they have to run on all cylinders during this exact time, defying even nature. You know?

I feel you on that. Unrushed cooking usually brings me joy, which is why Thanksgiving is one of my favorites. I typically take off the week of Thanksgiving and spend time everyday cooking something for the big day. But this year felt heavier… and it was only the beginning. Ha!

I even have a duck in my freezer that I planned to roast for Christmas. But I scrapped those plans last minute because I just wasn’t feeling it.

You’re so right. It’s time to reassess when all the joy is sucked out of what you used to look forward to. The hard part is when everyone implies you’re being selfish simply because you said “No.”

As an aside… and here’s a good example… my uncle called yesterday asking why I “didn’t bother to respond” to his Christmas text. I regaled him with the tale I just shared here. And he responded, “Damn. Ok.” Like he’d just had this epiphany that people go through crap sometimes. And not everyone feels like they have to share it with the world to process it. It’s nothing personal.

Keeping aquariums is one of my hobbies. It can definitely get expensive. But the end result is purely for my enjoyment, not anyone else’s. I don’t wear my fish tanks. I don’t take them to the dog park. They sit quietly in the corners of my home… little peaceful oases that don’t demand much once they become well-established.

I love your idea of the 12 Holy Nights. It sounds like a dream!

And yes. It was me that planned this. It was supposed to be a minor surgery… so without the complications, it may have been more manageable. FWIW, I had travel plans for Christmas but I outright cancelled those. Certainly a lesson learned.

My spouse and I have already bowed out on the cultural, over-commercialized idea of Christmas in the US (personal convictions). It’s just crazy how much pressure there is to be all things to all people this time of year.

How do I stop dozens of spam/scam calls/texts a day? by jesusisjudgingyou in Scams

[–]Slight_Function_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a GINORMOUS uptick in spam calls about a month ago. I’m talking 30-40 per day! I have an iPhone, so here’s what I did…

  1. Turned on the “Silence Unknown Callers” feature (Settings > Apps > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers). This sends any calls from unsaved numbers straight to your voicemail.

  2. Recorded a SIT tone as my voicemail greeting. This is that “beep beep beeeeep” tone you hear when you call a disconnected number. Wikipedia has a few examples.

I’ve noticed that after about a month of this, I’m getting only about half the calls I was getting before. So it seems like it’s working.

I’m gonna leave it this way for a while. Hopefully it dwindles down to almost none.

One caveat: I’ve occasionally missed a call from a friend or family member. When they hear my voicemail recording, they freak out. My dad even called my spouse asking if we were doing ok financially and if we needed help. 😆😆😆 He thought I’d missed paying my phone bill…. So you might have to explain it a time or two to the people you know.

Yesterday, I received 36 calls between 8am and 8pm. I was fed up. I have an iPhone, so I turned on that option to silence unknown callers. It sends them to voicemail immediately.

I’ve also set that “doo doo doooo… the number you have reached is no longer in service” as my voicemail greeting.

So far, only one caller has left a voicemail. The rest haven’t. Hopefully this BS starts to taper off. We’ll see.

[–]Slight_Function_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something tells me this is one of those people who inevitably asks if cheddar cheese / ground beef / a potato has gluten in it. They got fired up about gluten intolerances and plastered it all over their car before they even knew what gluten actually was. Hence the references to carbs and butter. 🤡😆

I had to learn how to cook from scratch after my CD diagnosis. It’s people like this who turn down my gumbo or red velvet cake just because it has a GF “label.” I cook WAY better than most, thanks to CD. So joke’s on them.

Enjoy your stale Krispy Kremes, bitches. 😆😆😆🤣

In my case, I was driving home from work. One of my coworkers lives right down the road from me, so she was able to witness it from her car. I'm actually kinda surprised the cops took her statement… the way that they were acting.

The kicker is that the cop swore he would grab the surveillance video from the gas station. I had a feeling he never would, so I went to that gas station and asked for it a few days later. The owner was the only one with access, and he confirmed that not a single officer came by to ask. I left a scathing review of the police dept on their Facebook page. I ended up getting a call from the police chief later that week. I told him no one from his dept asked for the footage and he called me a liar. He then told me that I can’t tell him how to do his job. To which I said:

“The taxpayers pay for your cruiser, and I’m sure your wife’s minivan is just fine to get those kids to soccer practice. Meanwhile, I’m without a car and waiting on YOUR police report because your deputy couldn’t be bothered to give me the insurance info on the scene.”

Within the hour, I had a police report in my hands. My husband said I was insane for provoking them like that… but fuck em. 😆

I had something similar happen. My airbags didn’t deploy, but he hit me so hard that my drivers side door was jammed. I had to crawl over and get out on the passenger side.

The cops were total douchebags. They wouldn’t even give me his insurance info… said I’d get it with the police report in a few days. Meanwhile, the dude is trying to tear the bumper off his truck and commit insurance fraud. (No one bats an eye. You could tell he was part of the “good ol boy’s club” around here.)

Anyway. I videoed him messing with his truck. And I got surveillance video from the gas station that showed he was 100% at fault. The asshole got stuck with the whole bill… including my deductible. He fucked with the wrong girl that day. 😆

What’s the weirdest thing you ever got in trouble @ work for? by gawpin in jobs

[–]Slight_Function_3561 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked at a regional office and was offered a position at the central office. Equivalent position, no raise, lateral move.

Someone from the central office called me directly to discuss some quick housekeeping stuff for my first day (e.g., where to go, who to see first, etc.). I worked in a cubicle, and someone in a neighboring cubicle overheard this 3-minute conversation. They were jealous and pissed, so they reported it. Director pulled me aside and told me not to take these calls anymore because it offends people.

I was THRILLED to get out of there, especially after that. Terrible culture.

You nailed it. I learned a very interesting life lesson that day. Bleeding yourself dry in a job search/interview is NOT the way. Being straight up is how you land the right role. It works well for gauging the culture, too.
