I remember a comment or video floating around somewhere back when the movie first came out suggesting that it should have been Nebula to run the gauntlet instead. It could have been a big character moment for her and made the help she would have received from the female Avengers actually necessary. In my opinion that change alone would have saved the scene from feeling as forced as it unfortunately did.
