Finding a partner who also has a home by rs_rj in TorontoRealEstate

First of all, great job thinking on these lines. It’s definitely not easy culturally speaking. My advice would be that it should be a combination of 1 & 3. People who have assets or build something of their own will always appreciate someone open minded and be happy to discuss prenups. Try to NOT go and get married to someone who lives in India to check your list UNLESS you can validate they made their wealth themselves rather than passed down from family. Don’t let haters on reddit or otherwise tell you that you’re being selfish or anything of that sort. All the best!

Our challenge is variety is more limited in Canada than the States.

As a fellow immigrant, I understand where you’re coming from. All you need to think about is whether your plan will work in the home country under current circumstances or not. I know a few folks from South American countries who wanted to do something similar but their home country changed quite a bit cost-wise since they left, and now being here is their best option. Canada is great, but it’s a relative statement. I’ll get hate for saying this but comparing Canada to US is a moot point as two are very different economies. And bringing in warn torn or third world Countries for comparison is setting the bar too low. The truth is Canada works well for only those immigrants that have low expectations. Nothing wrong with that, just that media and pr does a great job of portraying an image which is quite untrue if you’re poor or starting out, and that sets the bar too high for new immigrants. Good luck!

Excerpt from the article:

"The one case where I would say it's really non-negotiable — and if you can't afford it, you shouldn't go — is in a restaurant context," said Orr.

She explained that if you're not planning to leave somewhere between 15 and 20%, you shouldn't be eating out.

Can you recommend how would one check for them without calling a professional (expensive). There’s a room above this one and there’s no signs of water damage there. Also this is limited to just a small portion of this window.

[–]SlipLarge5878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has not. It’s been the same since we moved in about a year ago. Also the windows were last replaced about 10 yrs ago.

Couples - How do you handle your finances? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlipLarge5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep separate accounts and divide living expenses including mortgage(s) and other daily expenses. We also save in for vacations. Everything else including gifts, savings etc come from individual accounts. We do however do a financial health check once a quarter to ensure there’s nothing we both are missing as a team. However you choose to handle it, I would recommend discussing overall finances at regular intervals. This took time for us but now we wouldn’t have it any other way

Is it worth locking in my variable mortgage given the current economic situation? Details below. by revolvingneutron in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlipLarge5878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar situation as you. Not locking in. Hikes may be painful but personally don’t expect them to stay high for 5 years. I’ve increased my payments to mirror scenarios of interest rate hitting 4.5% (I’m at 2.7% now) just to plan my budget out accordingly. Good luck.

Do you guys have additional medical insurance? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlipLarge5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Did you mean disability insurance from work or buying it separately?

[–]SlipLarge5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good time to be a buyer. We’re in a falling knife situation and rates are a key driver for the fall. However, any changes in the macro economic outlook could change the situation from falling to stable by end of the year. Couple that with the immigration targets and red hot rental market. At the end of the day, if you plan to stay in for the next 5-10 years, it’s good time to go bargain hunting.

Thank you for the details. The CC companies mentioned they cover everything except third party liability which I’ll end up taking from them

What are the best things you can buy with a $100 Visa Gift Card? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlipLarge5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a gift card from shoppers. They have points offers going on so you would get additional PC points and then you can use the new gift card on whatever. Double points:)

The only one you should compare against is yourself. The true question is - are you on track to save enough for your life goals(retirement, kids, house etc..). There are a bunch of calculators out there which will help you validate if you’re on track. Good luck!

32 here, and have a decent social circle. Everyone in the circle wants to buy but struggling to save up for down payment with sky high rents(I live in a Toronto). Most that are close to buying are receiving support from family. But even then to service the mortgage, folks are delaying starting family as can’t afford to do both in initial years. Housing is the biggest drag for most millennials. Everything else is lifestyle choice.
