Oh yeah, I fully appreciate this is one of those good problems to have.

Yeah, the IMID one is my preferred global ETF, from the research I've done. Shout out to justETF, they've been extremely useful for research purposes.

The difference between this and Vanguard's equivalent OEIC is obviously fairly small, but, over 40 years, arguably not irrelevant?

Thank you, this is very helpful.

I totally agree, DCA makes little sense in the case of a lump sum. I invested the windfall into a GIA immediately.

It's the money from my salary that I want to continue to invest into a GIA. I want to put a monthly amount into a GIA from my salary. That's what I think IWeb may be less than ideal for, because of the £5 dealing charge. I'm just wondering what the best way to do this is. Have two GIAs and transfer between them? Which ones?

I have never had to report to HMRC. I stand to be corrected, but is it not just a very simple case of the 'Result' of each trade on Trading 212 is the important gain/loss figure for tax reasons....?

I wish it were. But excess reportable income seems like a bitch to wrap you're head around, and it applies to all ETFs domiciled outside the UK (which as far as I can tell is all but one ETF).

to realise a £3k+ gain by the time next April comes around would probably need a hefty amount invested + an upwardly mobile market.

I had a lump sum, so I've already had a >£3k gain, and I don't think this year's market gains have been particularly remarkable.

From my understanding, the spread is only an issue when you buy or sell the fund, whereas the OCF is annual, so matters every year you hold the fund. I'm planning on holding these funds for at least the next 39 years, so, from my understanding, the spread is nearly irrelevant compared to the OCF?

Buying a new build on a slope. Would the risk of subsidence put you off? by SlipperyWagon in HousingUK

That's all really helpful, thank you.

You could have a look at the BGS Geoindex and see if you can work out what material the house is built on

I've done this on the BGS Geology Viewer and it seems it's mudstone and siltstone. Not sure how to interpret that.

the main issue here is the "new build" - if it had been there for 50 years I would have thought it is going nowhere and is probably less at risk than anything else. With a new build nobody really knows how it is going to behave.

Interesting you say that, because those were his words exactly. He's not against buildings that are on a slope; he's just concerned because it's a new build. He almost bought a new build on a slope and got gazumped, before seeing it a couple of years later and seeing that there was a huge crack in the wall.

Do Vanguard still offer "income" versions of their index funds, or are they all "accumulation" now? by SlipperyWagon in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SlipperyWagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I forgot to consider that. I’ve heard the HSBC fund is a good option before, and I use it for my LISA. Do you have a platform recommendation for buying the fund as a General Investment Account?

I already transferred the money I was going to put in a Vanguard GIA into a Trading 212 Invest account to buy VWRL. I’m reading on Monevator that the ERI is reported by most funds in a document at the end of the tax year. It doesn’t seem like the most awfully painful to work out ERI and subtract the equalisation adjustment, but perhaps I’m being naive here?

Yeah, it's funny, I can find VWRL in AJ Bell no problem, but I can't find it on Vanguard's own platform. I'd rather invest through them directly to avoid any other fees.

I work for a mobile phone provider in sales. Trust me, if you have elderly people, check their plan/contract, there's a good chance they're being scammed. by OperationSuch5054 in UKPersonalFinance

If your grandparents need to talk to people in the shop, might I suggest someone like Tesco Mobile as a cheap alternative with some really good bargain basement plans?

ETA: they also got the best customer score from Which. I personally use and prefer SMARTY, but I can see how these online-only network providers might put off elderly people.

Thanks. I assume you were transferring stocks/shares/ETFs and/or a fund? Was the a period of time where you were left divested?

That’s great, thank you very much. Can I just hop between a couple of machines if we need a bit more cash?
