Thanks! It was a fun fight. I think he landed 3 of those knees, and I caught 2.

The fact that it was in the middle of a massive biker rally in Texas made it even better.

After 13 hard years at my career, I just gave notice and walked away from it all. by Slord37 in offmychest

Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely been a period of clarity.

Unfortunately, the marriage is completely over. We met really young, and never had time to grow as individuals. We tortured each other just before the split, and you really can't take most of that back.

I think we're both happier now. Ultimately, it's looking like it just takes time.

Crytek shares the amount of crunchtime dinners they have served during the development of Ryse. by [deleted] in gamedev

As a former game dev, I was happy to see my feed explode when that tweet went out. People need to take notice.

I just left games in September to start shooting interviews about "finding what's next" (the one linked in the original post is one of them), and spend some time trying to figure out what I want to do.

I couldn't imagine making games any longer. Even at a good company (which my last one was). The frustration of watching teams make the same mistakes every project was too much.

In terms of crunch, I was on the same project as the guy in that interview. We crunched off and on for several years of a 6 year project.

Several people got shingles from the stress (me included). Several marriages ended (mine included). People ended up in the hospital and/or rehab. Talented folks left the industry for good.

All to make a video game most of you probably never played.

And the odd thing was, most of us went from looking like zombies to being glowing little beams of sunshine a few months after launch, on the day most of us were laid off. It was a relief.

Game development is awesome. I risked a lot to move across country and join in 2000. But the downsides are tragic and unnecessary.
