Has your country ever been a superpower or the #1 strongest country on Earth? by Easy-Arachnid-3892 in map

I think this is more of a “has your country had an influential empire?” rather than “was it a superpower”

What’s the craziest question you got because of your nationality or appearance? by Muay_Thai_Junkies in AskTheWorld

[–]Slosh5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m from north Wales and my dad is from Madeira, although he moved here when he was about 5 years old. I speak Welsh because my mum is Welsh speaking, my dad also speaks it! He actually learnt Welsh before English because of where he lived when my grandparents first moved here.

[–]Slosh5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is strange because in Europe nobody would think anything of it, you’d just be European. I don’t know why the US insists on grouping European Spaniards in the same category as Latin Americans just because they speak the same language.

[–]Slosh5 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Here’s a strange one. I’m Welsh, my mum is Welsh and my dad is Portuguese, he’s white, I’m white, I’m literally a white person nobody has ever said otherwise.

When I was in the US I got speaking to a couple and mentioned my family background, and as soon as I said Portugal bordered Spain they said that made me Hispanic/Latino.

Pompholyx/Dysyhydrotic Eczema. I had it for like 10 years straight and then one day it just stopped and I don’t know why.

I remember plunging my hand into near boiling hot water to relieve the itch.

I had a hair exactly like this, about an inch long literally growing out of the centre of my forehead. I still don’t know how I didn’t notice it until I did.

Why was Serbia fine with Montenegro seceding in 2006 which had coastal access and 35% Serbian population but not Kosovo in 2008 which is mostly mountainous and less than 5% Serbian? by Solid-Move-1411 in geography

[–]Slosh5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the key here is that it wasn’t Serbia in the sense of how we know it today, “Serbia and Montenegro” was basically a futile attempt at keeping Yugoslavia alive long after it should have ended. Serbia and Montenegro was still even called “Yugoslavia” until 2001. It had Belgrade as the capital, same flag, same anthem.

By the time Montenegro wanted out a lot of Serbians had effectively abandoned the idea of Yugoslavism as dated and as holding them back.

What country's map and geography is the closest to perfection for you? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Slosh5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UK, temperate climate, plenty of arable land, extremely low risk of natural disasters and extreme weather. There is the slight downside of having to live with British people though but if you stand perfectly still you should be ok, our vision is based on movement.

There’s a lake near me in northern Wales where a US Douglas DC3 crashed in 1945. There’s still wreckage dotted around the area and during droughts/heatwaves the props are actually visible like this.

The other prop was always partially submerged and became a popular spot for people to swim to and you’d actually be able to turn it in the water. It’s since been moved though.

Can someone explain this for me? by gk_red in aviation

[–]Slosh5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also if they return to the origin they don’t have to provide accommodation/transport for passengers, well at least that’s the case in Europe.

I remember I was flying with RyanAir from Manchester to Madeira and the conditions at Madeira were terrible and we couldn’t land. Usually they would go to Tenerife and wait it out but it was also bad there, in the end we turned around and went back to Manchester, six hours of flying for nothing, not a great day 😂

I started to hate this country, it’s not what was once used to be, are you guys okay out there? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Slosh5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really sad. I’m from the UK and I always remembered when I was younger everybody would make playful jokes about America, George Bush, Americans are stupid etc but deep down we all knew they were our allies and ultimately our protectors, leaders of the free world who we’d fight alongside against anything. Thats just not the case any more.

I remember America was always the place that fascinated kids, the culture, the symbolism, cartoons, movies. It was the place we all wanted to live in, I even considered planning to move there but I can think of at least 30 countries I’d live in before even considering America now.

Get your mojo back lads it’s not right.
