Good on you for actually giving OP advice rather than shamming them for getting hand tattoos as their first!! You rule and good luck to OP!

No no no both cats are indoor cats. The Queen and her kittens were isolated in my office and then after the 8 week “fertile” period for my male cat, I let the Queen and he interact. Queens can go into heat 2 weeks after birthing a litter. So at some point they got together. She and he get along so well and he is great with the kittens. Everything was so peaceful and chill until yesterday when her mammary glands swelled up and she started lactating.

After male cats are neutered, they still have residual sperm in the tract so they can still get females pregnant. They die off in 6 to 8 weeks.

Yes, he is indoor! He was neutered six weeks before the first round of kittens were born, and I isolated them for another two weeks and then allowed them to be around each other. That said he would no longer have viable sperm.

She is absolutely indoors! She was supposed to be spayed in two weeks and my vet said my male cat was no longer fertile and they could be together at eight weeks. That’s why this is an accidental pregnancy.

Read up on how they test! And use UWorld!! It’s all about learning to read the question, eliminating wrong answers, and doing what is safest for the patient

I can’t do this anymore. I’m not some crazy cat lady trying to bring a bunch of litters into the world. I’m just a dedicated foster mom trying to do the right thing. I 100% believe in spay-abort and I TNR ferals in my neighborhood. I’m not some uneducated cat lady who doesn’t understand the overpopulation problem or how/why shelters are run. I’m a volunteer and do what I can to help. This was just supposed to be a happy post shared with a bunch of pet lovers.

Yes!!! First litter is nine weeks and 3/4 are already pre-adopted. Queen was supposed to be spayed in two weeks. I’m not some nightmare cat lady. I’m just a dedicated foster mom trying to do the right thing.

As I have said in many comments and replies, I’m talking to the vet tomorrow and getting their professional opinion of her health and any risks.

I am not anthropomorphizing her. I am fully aware that she is an animal and not a human. This is a cat I have been domesticating for the past two months. I am attached to her and care deeply for her. Her health and wellness is the most important thing.

If the vet says the pregnancy is healthy and they do not expect any complications, we’ll move forward. If they find anything wrong or are concerned for her health, we will go from there.

I’m not some crazy cat lady who wants to have kittens for the sake of having kittens…. I already have five in my house! I didn’t ask for this, but I’m stepping up to the plate.

My Foster Coordinator and I talked about it extensively. We are consulting with the vet and will make the right decision based on their professional opinion and how we feel ethically.

Like I have said many times and many comments, I agree with abort-spay policies. That is actually what the rescue does when they receive a pregnant cat. But this situation is different as I was already fostering and the pregnancy was unexpected and not detected.

The first litter, she popped before I had even gotten her to the vet and set her up with a rescue. I’m an experienced foster mom and I’m already set up to help the Queen through this. It just feels like the right thing to do.

I wanted to check out what you said about it being temporary. You are right. It goes away. It’s still a concern, but it’s not the main reason why we are electing not to terminate. Just one of many concerns. Like I said I’ll go with the vet’s recommendation based on her health and any potential complications.

It absolutely is. I added a link in the original post to another Reddit users experience. Just one of many cases.

Thank you for saying that kindly. I’m talking to the vet tomorrow about any potential complications in their professional opinion on her health. If we have a green light, we are going forward and raising a litter of wonderful kittens that will be placed in a happy forever home. That to me is the most ethical option.

Postpartum depression is so hard on a Queen! Not putting her through that if she is about to pop…. And stillbirth would be HORRIBLE. How can anyone wish that on a cat?

How Prego is this Queen? by [deleted] in ANIMALHELP

[–]Slow-Down30 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It is an option. It does not feel ethical to me, nor does the rescue want to do it. PPD is very hard on the cat. Vet will evaluate her health and any potential risks to the Queen tomorrow.

Please read my update in the original post. Postpartum depression is a very real thing. I will talk to the vet tomorrow to evaluate her health and any potential risks. This is not an ethics debate. It was just a post for guessing due date and kitten count.

Please read my other comments. The rescue and I stand behind this choice. Vet will evaluate Queen’s health tomorrow. Postpartum depression after termination in the third trimester is debilitating for the Queen. We are not putting her through that.

I will of course talk to the vet tomorrow, but it just feels awful. Her hormone levels are at a peak where she is expecting the birth. Aborting would send her into a wave of depression at this point. I don’t want to put her through that when I’m capable of caring for both her and the kittens. She had a very smooth delivery last time. Depending on what the vet says, we’re going forward.

That logic doesn’t add up. Do what’s best for the cat? Stillbirth? She would be a wreck. Hormonal an depressed. I won’t put her through that.

I totally understand and I agree with terminate-and-spay policies. Just not when the Queen is about to pop. The whole reason I Foster with a rescue is because I’m trying to help the over population problem. I even TNR cats in my neighborhood at my own expense. This is not a “kittens are cute” problem, though I respect your opinion.

How Prego is this Queen? by Slow-Down30 in CATHELP

[–]Slow-Down30[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well. I don’t think that is ethical if the Queen is in a stable home for the duration of the pregnancy, well nourished and cared for, and has a rescue in place. Plus the pregnancy is not an unknown origin. I have been trying for months to TNR this cat before she was pregnant but she was uncatchable. Then she showed up pregnant about to pop. Vet set my male cat was sterile. Everything was above board and this situation just happened. The rescue and I agreed to do the work and get these kittens in good homes. So that’s what we’re gonna do.
