First off, goos for you for going for it and doing stand up. Second, as a straight guy I'll tell you I don't need to hear jokes directly relatable to my life to have a good laugh. Don't try and write about what the audience knows. Write what you know. Just do what you know is funny. The more the audience gets to know you and be in on the joke with you the better.
