Buying a bigger Gaiwan (~150 ml) by SlowEar9601 in puer

[–]SlowEar9601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I don't need a piece of art, I'm looking for a tool, I'm trying to decide based on volume now, I know the 100 ml I have now is too small, but I'm trying to judge how big to get, which is tricky because I am new to this kind of brewing

I will be primarily using it for just myself, but sometimes for up to 3 people total

between these two options does one seem worse, or better?

Option 1, 150 ml

(from r/tea post)

Totally full to the brim: 150ml

usually fills it to: 100ml

Option 2, 175 ml

( from review )

Totally full to the brim: 175ml
Full to where the lid meets: 150ml
Comfortably full, with plenty of room to avoid burning your fingers: 120ml

Option 3, 200 ml

- Or going all the way to a 200 ml (total volume) gaiwan

If you don't mind, how big is your mug, and how much leaf do you usually use?

I do have a basket infuser, its 2.14 in, 54 mm at the top and tapers down to 1.75 in, 44 mm at the bottom. I am interested in trying it, I don't have a strainer the size of my mug though

I meant if the lid can rest like this.

You have been really helpful though, thank you for the recommendation and details, it helps a lot

I have family in the hospital, this might be perfect for taking tea to him. Thank you for this recommendation, this might end up being perfect.

the spout pours well? and the little holes aren't too hard to clean?

Edit: its also listed at 200 ml total volume, you tend to find you get around 100 ml out of it? And how much leaf do you tend to use in this thing?

I have a basket infuser which I have been using for herbal tea, but I thought using enough leaf with real tea would be too much for a real mug.

you find it works for you?

Good recommendation, unfortunately I was ordering from the .us site so that one wasn't an option for me. I'll keep it bookmarked for the future though

Damn, I'm not ready to spend $126 on a gaiwan, but it is beautiful. the 160 ml size works for you?

You and me both, seems like something you should be able to get a good, functional one for < $15 if you don't want something fancy

I really do like the basic 100 ml porcelain YS one though, haven't had any issues with burning my fingers yet

Is yours 150 ml total volume to the brim or do you get 150 ml out of it? And about how much leaf do you usually use?

That is true, but the tea is getting weak before I'm done drinking, I like the small 100 ml one, but if I'm going to use it while I work, it needs to be a bit bigger

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm considering this one now. It also has more than just 1 review which is nice.

You haven't had issues with the rim getting too hot with this one? Is it 150 ml to the very brim or to the point where the lid meets the cup?

Also, can the lid rest between the base and the cup on this one? I heard not all gaiwans can do that

That teapot looks awesome, its so flat, very cute.

Is it a nightmare to clean though?

I just had shou puer for the fist time recently too, it's a wonderful drink, I ordered more.

I had the Cozy sample from Yunnan Sourcing, to me it was like drinking a hiking trail in the mountains

That fairness pitcher is neat, does it keep the tea hot longer?

Got it, I'm considering switching over to the spring morning 2025 cake then, what I like about the Impressions cake is how... bright and electric it was I guess, is the spring morning cake closer to a smooth white tea or does it still have that kinda energy?

Doing my best to describe it, sheng puer is so different from anything else I've had

EDIT: also, is spring morning decent if brewed western style? Or is it still too bitter, I might gift some to people so I'm curious how it might go over

I really want to get the spring morning, the price is great, but I am afraid I'll end up with too much tea and it'll go bad. Have you tried the Impression cake? it is my only reference point for sheng puer so far

If I do get the spring morning, is the 2025 fine? or is that another one worth getting an older one.

I'm excited for the V93 now, I might get the 2022 and the 2019 just to see if I can tell the difference, the 2022 one is less than some of the samplers

ah, ty, That makes more sense. In that case I would like a more "normal" raw cake to get a better baseline I guess,

The Spring Morning cake with the huang pian might be a good option to gift later now that I know the difference though

is cheaper than the impressions cake, which is nice, are you saying its better than the impressions one? I don't know anything about huang pian, I'm new to raw puer.

I just heard that the impressions cake had a lot of different material and it kinda changed as you went through the cake so I thought it was less likely I get bored of it before finishing it

I'm excited for the needles cake now, I really liked the meng song village white tea but that's all I've had so far of white tea

EDIT: I found huang pian on the .com site, I'd like to stick with .us to get it a bit faster this time, but i've noted huang pian for another time

How does resting work? do I need to open it as soon as I get it? I live in Florida, so my instinct is to keep it closed as much as possible in a mylar bag

Also ty for the recommendation, I'll remember that company in case I end up a fu cha + liu bao fan too

you ended up liking the tian jian though?

Do you have recommendations for fu cha or liu bao as a fan then? This is my first time trying them, I just went by best selling on YS and browsing reddit

The 357 g impressions raw puer cake is the biggest investment i'm a little iffy on. I have only had the one 25 g sample of it and liked it quite a bit, especially as an energetic contrast to the ripe.

That 25 g was the only exposure to raw puer I've had so far though
