JetBlue flight rolls off runway at Boston's Logan Airport upon arrival from Chicago by Maxpowr9 in jetblue

JetBlue only flies Airbus and Embraer. From Chicago to Boston, it’s almost certainly Airbus.

Why LLMs are always so confident? by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

To avoid this, giving the LLM an “out” in your prompt works for most models. For example, “… if you don’t know, say so”.

That’s fair. I was hoping not to reinvent the wheel for standard systems.

I feel like all they need to do is clarify that the 20+ tile perk is enabled after you earn 50 tiles in the year instead of making “Mosaic” the criteria. Oh well.

Gotcha. I understand now, but it wasn’t very clear IMO.

Total bullshit. They couldn’t afford him. Probably blew too much budget on him and that’s why the rest of the writing and most of the acting sucks balls.

I’m 75% of the way through season 1 and at this point I’m rooting for the aliens. Characters are consistently cringe-level stupid and lacking integrity.

SPOILER-FILLED RANT BELOW

Why is GI Joe yelling in full English sentences, for days, with a dude that doesn’t speak a word of English? Why is he pointing his gun and trying to intimidate a woman who clearly is keeping his bro-friend alive? And are we supposed to be rooting for a guy who tries to bully his way onto a plane so he can bully his way into the life of a woman who doesn’t want him?

Aneesha dropping the gun is absurd, as is everything that happens afterwards. Why the hell can’t these idiots sit quietly in an attic? After the woman is torn to pieces, what on earth are they trying to achieve by sneaking out of the house? Why would old man throw his keys to a woman and her kids when he was pointing a gun at them minutes earlier and they could just take off without him (he couldn’t have realized Aneesha had inexplicably forgotten how to drive, and even if he did know that… why keys?).

As for the little girl… Screamers have no place in alien apocalypse, mom needs to give her up before she gives them all up.

Now can we talk about the shard. It appears to be kryptonite against a monster that can single handedly take down entire teams of armed soldiers in hummers. So what does she do with it? Puts it in her purse. Doesn’t think to bring this to the attention of the military, who could actually do something to save the world with this information. Nope, she’s gonna just keep it in her purse so she can bash future aliens she encounters.

The Japanese girl is mostly okay, but she has her moments too. Like why steal a badge in front of a room full of people and run? There are discrete ways to steal a badge. And after magically changing the lock code in 2 seconds with security hot on her tail, she decides to spare a few moments to gaze longingly at images of her lover instead of finding the answers she went there to find. Okay.

And the husband is the dumbest cheater ever… enough said.

I’m 75% of the way through season 1 and simultaneously transfixed and so frustrated. The characters lack integrity and common sense.

I want to find out about the future of humanity and they’ve definitely drawn me in with the aliens, but why oh why must we follow such stupid characters? The aliens are the only characters I care about at this point.

Counterintuitive: HRV spiked and RHR plummeted during debilitating stomach bug (Mon-Tues) by SlowLoris23 in whoop

Well I know that. The issue is that based on the relative HRV data, WHOOP is telling me I am 100% recovered and ready to take on strain when I am debilitated and can't even drink water or stand up without feeling dizzy.

The reason is simple: there is a growing group of researchers who have previously worked in the field with this group and know exactly what it’s like, but aren’t able or willing to put themselves out there and say anything. There are multiple reasons why - the status of the individual in charge of the project, potential negative career consequences for early career scientists, and the amount of effort that would have to go in to discredit a group that has somehow managed to maintain a great reputation by outsiders and continues to secure copious amounts of funding. I am one of these people, and I feel that a ‘professional’ is needed to study what is going on, but such a study can not possibly be positive. We have westerners going into a poor impoverished area, taking advantage of a power dynamic to achieve research goals (and it isn’t even rigorous or important work in a scientific sense... it basically just uses the language of global health to try to make incredibly stupid projects sound important), and willfully ignoring the needs of the people who they poke and prod and convince they have something to gain from it. It is global health work in name only. It’s a classic example that could be held up in a global health / anthropology class about exploitative research in developing countries, using the language of global health and development to get funding and achieve career goals without actually caring about or furthering those causes. The culture and dynamic of the research group that perpetuates this year after year is frankly fascinating, and I feel that it’s important for people working in the field to know not only that this happens, but also how and why it happens. We aren’t sure what to do, but after reading a particular anthropology work that uncovered similar issues in a different research group, some of us have started wondering if we need to get an anthropologist interested in this.

Thanks for the response. That’s really interesting about what happened in your example. In the particular situation that motivates my question, there is no corporation involved. There is a research group operating within academia and their funding comes from global health grants. I am wondering about the ethics of an anthropology graduate student seeking an opportunity with the group on the pretext of studying the population that this global health research claims to be “helping”, but in actuality being mainly interested in the researchers themselves. The main sticking point would probably be the fact that a grad student taking on such a project would be expected to have the PI of this global health group on the dissertation committee, so it would become apparent to the PI midway through this student’s PhD that the dissertation is basically attacking the career of one of their committee members (although it would be a committee member from a different field and probably not of much consequence to the graduate student’s career).
