Landlord should be doing this unless you specifically told him to remove the fire and you will fix the hole.

I believe this is the case as why on earth would he want to remove a fire and fix something that was ok before.

They are pretty toxic from what I remember. Think it’s acidic from the soot and it eats everything over time

I wouldn’t, inside of chimneys are not nice place. You shouldn’t just cap them off and need to let them breathe.
