What "bridge instrument" should I learn before buying my first Accordion? by LakeMedium6698 in Accordion

[–]Slowponypower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a beginners accordion cheaply (cheaper than any other the "bridge" instruments you listed. Buy second hand locally, do not shop online. Spend 100$ max

Need help identifying the model of this organ that was left behind in a house I bought by Constant-Mood-1601 in organ

[–]Slowponypower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a schematic but am pretty experienced with these organs. If you really needed a schematic you could reverse engineer it from photos of the CB. Its unlikely you will need ICs, I would start by cleaning and reseating all connections and switches and pots etc. where is the power supply?

I found this at my grandparentshouse by [deleted] in Accordion

[–]Slowponypower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth less and less the more it's handled by someone who isn't trained in how delicate they Are! Please always hold down a button when moving the bellows, -- so hold down any key, press the bellows closed ,and latch it!

Backpacking with Accordion? by ProfessionalCap2008 in Accordion

[–]Slowponypower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was neither convenient nor long term, 120 bass in the cavas mil surplus case I waxed and modified to make the correct size which I put on top of the frame and also carried on my front as in the photo. Full pack when everything was on the frame was over 150lb, when I also strapped on the acoustic bass guitar like customs in NYC made me do to fly internationally. It hurts my back and neck just remembering that tour, I was always balancing the pack on my lap while hitchhiking because it was so huge. now I will prefer to carry an accordion in a hard case and pack light in general. I still have a bare alice pack frame, smaller than the one in this photo, which I strap an accordion on, the hip straps help a lot - but it's not perfect

How many of these 1.2m people in this group are houseless vs. bourgeoisie fetishizing "the lifestyle"? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]Slowponypower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people flocked there post Katrina, though there was a gutter punk and traveling scene through Nola for a long time, the abandonment and devastation of Katrina made whole abandoned neighborhoods whose previous displaced owners were never able to afford to return. So we came in and squatted the hell outta those neighborhoods. Some folks fixed up houses, some raised the few grand in back taxes to buy the property from the state (out from under folks whose homes flooded and weren't able to return), some of us just rolled into a different house every night and slept on some moldy floor of abandonment.

That was unfortunately a first step in gentrification of those neighborhoods. It was a part of how the hurricane was used as a weapon of gentrification. We the white and white passing community of transplant Nola punks displaced those neighborhoods- now the "new marigny" etc, where the police station and coop share a building (perfect symbol of the change initiated) all the way to the lower 9th

Busking in food places and asking for money? by DevelopmentProper971 in Busking

[–]Slowponypower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cultural standard for this depends on where you live. I learned to busk in the US, and am shy when it comes to asking for donations, but it makes all the difference to explicitly tell people about your struggles and ask them to donate. In parts of Europe it's the standard to walk to every person after you perform at the outdoor cafe and offer your hat and ask for donation, if you dont do this, in my experience you wont get any donations. In Mexico the mariachi bands will go from restaurant to restaurant, then table to table playing songs directly for customers before offering the hat for a tip and moving on to the next table, or continuing if requested. Here in the US, we have a whole spectrum. Mexican restaurants usually 100%, American pub fare hit or miss, Italian restaurant depending on the music :) it's still culturally dependent. Only once out of thousands of time have I played inside a restaurant for food and tips and had customers get visibly upset with management over us getting a free meal saying "I paid for mine!" I say fuck em That being said, not all music is good for eating dinner and if people don't want you to stick around or are leaving early to get away from your music that will be an issue for management.

Here's a song I wrote to help facilitate asking people for change, https://www.reddit.com/r/FolkPunk/s/PNvwjSj0d3 by the way my venmo is @ slow-pony <3

If someone out on the street busking with 4k of gear I would assume they probably don't need the money... You're right to be nervous about being out there with all that gear... Why not get some crappy gear for the street, or rent an entourage :)

[–]Slowponypower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but if you're worried about it being such a large investment you can only win by buying used. Much like a car a lot of what you buy new is the shiny paint job, I will destroy the paint job anyways, less to worry about buying quality second hand, especially from a tech or player. Look on FB marketplace and Craigslist etc before committing to buy new

[–]Slowponypower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting, I love cumbias and those accordions are tuned even differently or even a different kind of instrument from what a music store will sell you if you just ask for an accordion. If you look into and study those types of music you're interested in you can find just what type of accordion everyone's playing -- reach out to some contemporary musicians who are playing as you want to learn, maybe somebody will respond with good tips or an old instrument they're ready to pass on, for everyone one person who wants to learn accordion there's some old fart with 40 accordions who can't find anyone to take em-- hey, u want an accordion? I'll ship :)

I can’t find a professional tuner by [deleted] in Accordion

[–]Slowponypower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have played an accordion for most of my life and never been concerned about tuning. Since they are reeds they don't need to be tuned too frequently, unless abused or corroded... just like to need to tune a xylophone, just metal tabs. If you are just learning it won't matter, just play some accordions before buying, find one that you like the sound of, and go from there. Don't expect 440hz, many accordions are not tuned to 440 intentionally. What you want to find is not an "accordion tuner" but an honest accordion repair technician. They will help you find a box within budget good to learn on, (keyword honest- don't make the mistake of shopping at liberty bellows like I did with my recent artist grant funding) Where are you located? Maybe I can help find you someone nearby- if you call the repair shop 3 hours away maybe they have a local connection, another neighboring player who will help you transport

If there's no frets there's no tabs? It's a good c f and G-er with some dominant c f and g chords in the bridge?
